New House with existing ADT alarm system - My Options ?

Just bought a new house that is completely wired with an ADT system. Motion sensors, door sensors, battery backup and what appears to be a cellular antenna.

I am not too keen on paying for monitoring, but would like to be able to use the alarm sans the call center and just have the external siren. (And perhaps text messages to my phone)

I have no codes.

Is this thing useable without ADT help?

Call a local alarm co and tell them your situation. They should be able to get you fixed up w/o monitoring.

PM sent to you. Code stuff isn't public matter.

ADT and other large national alarm companies all charge about 200 - 300% more than most local alarm companies for monitoring service. This is because they almost always give you the basic alarm system for $99 or some ludicrous number. A proper home alarm system should cost around $1200 - $2000 and monitoring should be no more than $15 per month. I pay about $22 for month for central station + cellular backup.

Amen. ADT are crooks. I would know...I am stuck in a three year contract with them and have an alarm that works intermittently with no way to repair without paying their ridiculous replacement costs. My fault for not researching them better and just trusting the name brand, as well as not really reading through the contract thoroughly and discovering that the equipment is my responsibility should it break. Just a crappy deal. There is an AWESOME alarm company out there that has no contract, and its like $15 a month..but you buy your own equip.

If you have an ADT system, can you switch to another provider? The house we bought had a ADT system, wife got it hooked up, service blows, and the contract should be up soon?

Go with a local company for your monitoring. I did so, and have been very happy with it (and they're actually responsive when I have an issue).

For the record, we have had an ADT alarm system and monitoring for twelve years.

We are completely satisfied with their service, response time, and quality of equipment.

See if your insurance company has a relationship with ADT, which will substantially lower the price. USAA has such a relationship with ADT.
