Can anyone ID this rifle for me?
A friend of mine acquired this rifle today but doesn't know what it is. He says there are no markings or numbers on it anywhere that he can see. Any help ID'ing it would be greatly appreciated.
Due to the quality of the picture, it's hard to tell. But the giveaway in my opinion is the location of the barrel band. Seeing as how it is in the middle of the forearm, instead of in the more usual forward portion of the forearm, I'm thinkin' it's a NON-FIRING REPLICA of the 1873 or 1876 Winchester.Be sure the bore is clear, and rifled. I don't see much in the way of sights either, which is a give-away on those wall hangers as well. Lastly I suppose it could be a copy from Pakistan. Supposedly, they can copy almost anything in a few days, and you'd hard pressed to tell the difference at a glance. If ya ever do find out what/who made it, I'd be curious to know. 44.
Looks like a Winchester 1873 to me, though the picture quality and lighting isn't the best.
Thanks guys, the barrel band looked really odd to me too, but I'm not expert. I advised him to NOT shoot it unless he can have an expert look at it in person and tell us otherwise. Thanks for taking a look.
I am not sure it is an 1873 or and 1876 as there does not appear to be a side plate on the receiver......my guess would be an 1866 with a rough or antiqued finish....

I was noticing that too, I'm not sure if it's just picture quality or if it's not there. Did they make a steel/iron frame 1866?
the rear sight is flipped up near the R in traveler.
Looks like a model 66 rear sight

I don't believe Winchester ever made an iron or steel frame 1866. There was a company (Chaparral) that made a short run of steel framed 66's, but they were not well received by the lever gun crowd. I think it had more to do with the quality of the gun than the fact that it had a steel frame though.....

+1. It's a replica. 73's and 76's have removable side plates. That one doesn't. Also the forearm band is too far back. It's also common on replicas to have a rifle buttstock on a carbine barrel
