 Questions to Vector Uzi owners?

I've always wanted a Vector Uzi and I live in Michigan. For whatever reason MI measures OAL with the stock closed. We can't own SBR's but can own a rifle with at least a 16" barrel and OAL of 26" with the stock fulle collapsed, and then we have to register it as a pistol (Makes no sense I know). My delimma is I believe the Vector Uzi with 16" barrel is under 26" OAL with the stock closed. Can someone measure to confirm this for me, I believe it's 24" or 25". Can you also measure the outside diameter of the barrel as well.

I'm thinking I could purchase a stock 16" barrel by either welding on a sleeve at the end or threading it and permanently attaching a flash supressor to make the gun's OAL 26 1/2". Then I could legally order the gun minus a barrel and be legal. Has anyone done this or have any thoughts on extending the barrel? Does anyone sell a 20" barrel I could have cut down to legal length?

The Vector SA measures 23" from tip of barrel to end of receiver. Its is 24" from tip of barrel to end of stock while closed. You can always get a fixed stock and keep your 16" barrel or if you want the folding stock get a 18" barrel. Outside barrel diameter is roughly 5/8". Sorry I don't have a micrometer for more accurate measurment, maybe someone else can get you that.

OD on mine is 0.648". Another option is having a fixed wooden buttstock instead of the folding on there. Besides, the wooden buttstocks is way nicer to shoot with, alot of shooters find the folders to be uncomfortable.

ETA: Green Mountain has 16" Uzi barrels, and they may be able to make you up a threaded one w/ perm. muzzle device.
ETA #2: The quick detach wooden buttstocks have to be modded to use a screw to hold them on, much like the way the folder attaches. ATF views semi uzis w/ unmodded qiuck detach buttstock as an SBR.

MI members on Uzitalk say they just put an 18"barrel on the gun and you are good to go. Lots of good info for the uzi there.

If go the surplus wood stock with the quick detatch hardware and dont want to modify it your self you can purchase the hardware from this place for only $30. Here is the link http://www.jjcustomllc.com/products.html

Keep in mind that if you modify a 16" barrel with some sort of muzzle attachment it has to be small enough to let the barrel nut pass through it. That or order a new barrel nut and put it on the barrel before the muzzle device is permanently attached.
I thought I saw 18" barrels at one point in time available...

As said above you need an 18 inch barrel if you are to use a folding stock, personally I like shooting the full wooden stock better, better check weld for me anyway. That way you can retain the 16 inch barrel.

I too have always been told that by putting an 18" barrel onto a semi auto will then allow you to have a quick detatch stock, meeting the OAL of 26" with stock removed. Now I measured from tip of barrel to end of receiver with a 16" barrel and it is 23". So by putting a 18" barrel would only make it an OAL of 25". So how does this work then by adding an 18" barrel? It doesn't get it to 26". Can someone advise.

Ok so for the time being I bought a 5 1/2" dpms .223 flash supressor. I then cut the threaded portion off and it slip fit exactly over the barrel. I left the barrel nut on since it won't fit over the supressor though. Welded it up and now I'm actually going to be 26 1/2" OAL without any stock and adding the OAL including the collapsed stocks butt that sticks out I end up around 27 1/2". I'm eventually going to buy a second 16" barrel and have cut down and threaded to accept the 5 1/2" then pin it, making it the same OAL as the one I have now, only it will likely look nicer and I'll use this barrel as an extra.

Could you post pictures when finished, interested in what it looks like.

Here's so far, I ground it down a little more tapering it. I'm going to have to put it in a lathe and turn it down so it makes a perfectly smooth transition, then I think it will look nice. But for a shooter it should work fine now!

That looks NICE! Now is the muzzle brake placed at the end of the 16" barrel, or did you cut the barrel a bit? The barrel looks shorter. Also it looks as you cut off about 2" of the brake to remove the threads?

I chopped the supressor at the thread portion which shortened it. Then I slid it back roughly an inch or two on the barrel, leaving me 26 1/2" OAL. I actually re-welded some more and then ground it down so it's more tapered. I'm going to have access to a lathe shortly and will turn it down so it will look even better and taper back perfectly.

It's too bad that you have to make all those changes to the barrel, but it looks real cool. Nice looking UZI.

nicely done.

For anyone else reading this thread (and those in MI who may not have mad welding skills) - talk to Vector, they will work with you, attach a permanent brake, etc.

Good folks.
