MP5SD, or suppressed 9mm AR. Enlighten me.
Title sums it up. I shot an MP5SD (full auto) a few months ago, and LOVED it. Quiet, controllable, and just really surpassed my expectations. I've never shot a 9mm AR. Since shooting the MP5, I've started to look into building either an MP5SD, or an SBR suppressed 9mm AR. Bonus on the AR, is that the upper (with my magwell adapter) could be used on a registered receiver I have access to. MP5SD would be semi.
It looks like I can build the AR for just a few hundred bucks (already have stripped lowers, magwell blocks, grips, stocks, etc...just need the upper), wheras it appears there's no good way to get in to MP5SD territory for less than $2400 or so.
MP5SD- more compact, based on my reading it seems to shoot "smoother" and be more controllable, but it's expensive, parts are expensive and a clone will take some tweaking to get running right.
suppressedSBR9mmAR - less expensive, use parts I already have, controls I'm more familiar with, easy access to additional parts, build it myself, larger in size, possibly not as quiet, I've read it's less controllable.
I'm looking for some input from those who have experience with both. MP5SD would take me in a completely different direction that my current firearms, "just another AR" would fit right in with the others I have. I seem to -want- an MP5SD (again, having shot one), but everything else seems to say the SBRAR9mm is the way to go.
I guess I should add, I'm wanting "as quiet as possible" and compact. That MP5SD was super quiet, and not very large. I don't think there's any way to get a 556 round to that sound level, with a short barrel. If I'm mistaken in that belief, I'll consider another 556 variant, and drop the 9mm idea altogether.
I've tried both. When given the option of an MP5SD or a 9mm SBR/M16 I chose versatility and went M16.
I can run many more options than I could with the SD
TRG
I have shot a full auto mp5sd as well. I found the mkp5k pdw to be more controllable

This. Unless you can afford both.
If you can find an MKE AT-94k to SBR, you won't be disappointed. You can have a muzzle device added so you can suppress and it would be awesome. On top of that, if you have a detachable 9mm can, you can also suppress handguns and such while still having a fully functional MP5kPDW clone. If you have to SBR and suppress only one thing, go with the AR, but with a detachable can. That way you can throw on whatever upper you want to on it and you can also reuse the can on another platform. That said, I love my PDW.

MP5SD Pros:
- Roller lock design means softer recoil, making it more controllable
- Compact, especially with the A3 collapsible stock
- Cost of 9mm ammo
- Suppressor design makes shooting even supersonic ammo really quiet
- CDI factor –– it is the iconic 80's submachinegun!
MP5SD Cons:
- 2 stamp gun –– 1 stamp for SBR, 1 stamp for suppressor
- Cost, of parts and gun itself (even if it is a clone)
That said, I would love to get an MP5SD. I decided to go with a full-size MP5, MP5K-PDW and suppressor with a 3-lug adapter so I can switch it between the two. MP5s are a lot of fun to shoot!
I've been on the fence for awhile now between the two but for me, its the price,
I would love to a full size MP5 but I just don't have the money.
$2000. bucks for a 9mm, really? its insane.
