a .357mag AR??
would it be possible to make an AR-15 upper chambered for .357mag? and would it be possible to make it feed from a modified AR mag?
i am SPECIFICALLY talking about a .357mag, not "some similar rimless" cartridge.
any info would be greatly appreciated
IMHO I think it would work, but being no expert and never seeing one makes me wonder why?
6.8 mag, different follower . . . I must be missing something.
i have been asking about it because i REALLY want one.
Having built one in the other 357 (let's call it 357bottleneck!), a 357mag would be a righteous pain in the arse. I'd hope you handload, because I'm not sure if conventional revolver ammo would be uniform enough (brand to brand) to consistently cycle the action.
But a 357mag would fit in the action but you'd need to enlarge the bolt face.
Here's the 357sig I built:

Good luck. I was looking into that a few years ago with 357 max brass, and other than profiling a barrel and failing to make this bullet chamber in a dummy barrel this is as close as I got.
But then, I was trying to use old style 20 round UNmodified magazines with that stupid tab in the front.
That rim is a killer.

Rimmed case is the killer,
But as stated, you could go with a rimless auto type case such as the 357 sig,

dano, please read this thru again. In all reality .357sig isn't even a similar rimless cartridge, it is a .40 cal casing loaded with a 9mm projectile.

Can anyone explain why the rim kills this idea? I am not sure I get it.

they don't stack very well in a square box magazine. The magazine would need to curve to accomodate the stack, and the mag also would need to slant back a bit, so that the rim of the top cartridge is in front of the rim of the round below it - and that rim is ahead of the round below it.
There is a reason that there are not many magazine fed rimmed guns. Off the top of my head, I can only think of the 10-rd mags in PSLs, SVDs, and SVTs. Beyond that, the BREN used 20rd mags IIRC.... But box mags for rimmed cartridges are awkward at best. They work well in pan magazines and belts tho.
i talked to a guy who built a few AR's that used rimmed cartridges and he explained how to make it headspace correctly.
now that i know how to make it work, is there a gunsmith who would be willing to build an upper???
There is no issue with setting headspace. Feeding is the issue.

that can be fixed easily with desert eagle magazines
