I have a old Dial caliper I bought from Midway about 20 years ago. This week the Thumb wheel broke off. The caliper still seems usable. Is it time for a new one and if so what brand and model?

how much do you want to spend?
a nice Mitutoyo or Starret is alot of cash
or you can get a cheap Harbor Freight one for about $10

^^^^ It's the answer.

Your caliper is probably still usable.

How the hell did you break off the thumb wheel?

You can still use it if it shows zero on the dial when closed.

As far as upgrading, that is where pawn shops shine.

You can usually find a Starret or Mitutoyuo for around $69-$75.

That's what mine cost when the old RCBS plastic finally went to reloading heaven.

The thumb pad looks like it was made of plastic or rubber and then painted silver. This part also holds the thumb wheel. The thumb wheel got harder to turn while I was using it and just snapped off and fell on the floor.

Unless you have a real need to own the best, give a close look to the Harbor freight digital. Mine has been utterly reliable, and concurs with my machinest nieghbors high dollar one, which makes him angry

Cruise around fleabay for one. Lots of machinist tools there.
I got a nice Mitutoyo digital for $35. And a real nice 13" B&S vernier for $25.

If you want a great set, buy these

http://www.amazon.com/Mitutoyo-500-196-20-Digimatic-Digital-Caliper/dp/B001C0ZPNO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326644798&sr=8-1

If you don't want to spend $125, buy the Harbor Freight cheapos.

I own both. The Mitutoyos are used at work and the Harbor Freights are used for reloading at home.

Thanks for the tip Watchwatch; the Mitutoyo 500-196-20 looks like a good quaility one at a great price.

Always check the monthly sale flyers at KBC, Enco, and MSC when buying precision tools, there is always something on sale with great discounts.

Pay close attention to the Harbor Freight calipers. I bought and got it unpackaged before I noticed it measure to 0.01 inches. Okay for carpentry, except it doesn't measure in fractional inches.

+2 on the pawn shops. I have picked up a 1-2" Mitutoyo electronic digital mic, a Browne and Sharp 6" dial caliper, immaculate 6" Mitutoyo 6" dial caliper and a Starret gage block set at a couple local hawk shops.
135.00 total investment.
Just check your calipers for repeatability before you drop the dough.
