Can anyone loan me a tap for oversized 1911 grip bushings?
I have a problem child of a Colt with one side worth of bushings that are totally stripped out and the boss doesn't want to spring for the tap.
I would be willing to pay shipping both ways.
.255 x 60 pitch tap, and your going to break about even with dealer cost either someone shipping you one both was, as just picking one up when you buy the over size grip screws. The tap and 4 bushing are only $45.
As for free hand tapping, Don't.
You want to use a mill so you can vise the frame dead level, then tap square to the frame. Any canting to the threads ends up with the grip bushing not matting cleanly to the frame, just ending up with the bushing not wanting to stay penned, and the grip screws looking canted as well
But may luck out, and find someone local that will loan you are tap, and may have a few extra grip bushings as well.
Thanks for the tip.
Its looking like I'm gonna have to buy it out of my own pocket, which is no big deal, I just hate farming out work that I can do in my own shop.
