Speaking of getting the rifle wet

My 10x42SF Super Sniper's side focus ring busted loose hunting yesterday morning. I took it off to return it to SWFA and discovered this:

Kind of freaked me out, but I wasn't surprised. My buddy used it while we were at sniper school two years ago. I had taken it as a spare which proved invaluable since his rifle locked up and was sent to the shop on day one. It rained on us 4 out of 5 days. The rifles were cleaned meticulously every night, but this still happened.

The screws are in pretty rough shape. It looks like the base screws are rusted, too. The rings are TPS and the base is either an EGW or Brownells. Should I just try cleaning it all up or replace the screws and if so, with what size?

Clean the rings, chase the threads with a tap if you have the right size and replace the screws if it looks like more than surface rust.

Surface rust on them is totally normal and pretty unavoidable if you actually use the thing. I had a similar occurrence with my Seekins rings, but not quite as bad. I just scrubbed the rust off with a brush, wiped them down and reinstalled them.

That looks like surface rust in the pic.

No pitting, no material loss; you're golden. Clean and oil.

Some is but it looks a lot heavier on the screws in the middle. I'm going to strip base and everything off while the scope is gone. The rings are aluminum, so they'll clean right up. Any idea what the threads are?

I believe they're #6-24, but not totally sure. If you call TPS, you can probably not only get a solid answer, but also get them to send you some new screws in an envelope.

I finally got through to TPS today. I think they must be a busy place. Hard luck on getting a call returned over two days and all of their email addresses (from both of their websites) gets kicked back. $7.86 got me a package of new screws for the rings. I got the bases' rear screws out and they were OK. The front two and stuck and it started to round them out. I'm leaving them be. Kind of a blessing that the scope took a dump and found one of the links in the chain of accuracy was rusting. Additionally, it got my attention back to this rifle from another one I have been brooding over. I ended up getting a sitting bipod and a couple of ADM QD bipod mounts to select between the two. I got a Seekins sling rail system ordered for it. I had sent an ID in for a discount. Shiloh called back and was a really good rep to deal with. That kind of CS goes a long ways.

Just a follow-up post about the scope. Just got a brand new SS dropped off by the brown truck today. 7-8 days from when I sent it back. That's an excellent turnaround time. SWFA has some pretty good CS and honors their lifetime warranty.

Just don't get it in your eyes, or you'll never seez again.
