How to switch from NV scope to dayscope with quick detach mounts that hold zero?
Hello all, This is a first for me since all of my rifles have Leupold Mark 4 rings to a solid reciever. Here's what im looking to do however, I have a SA inc. M1A that can shoot 1/2 MOA if I do my part. My Currently it uses a Kahles ZF95 with the Mark 4 rings. I'd like to be able to detach the day scope, and put on my Zeiss Orion 80 Fero Z51 Night Vision scope. The NV scope uses an ARMS #7 Stanag to Picatinny adaptor mount. What would I have to purchase now to be able to readily swap these two scope out and *here's the biggest kicker* HOLD ZERO! You guys know best, thats why I came here, thanks in advance to all who help.
Obviously you'll need some sort of picatinny rail on the rifle (ARMS 18, springfield armory etc..). Then look for a quality set of QD rings for your day scope. Larue tactical has a great reputation. If you go with Larue, they have both rings and 1-peice mounts that should work for you (I would think the rings would be more versatile in terms of where you can place them and where you can mount the scope) You will have to determine the required height-over-base needed to keep proper eye position, and ensure the objective bell clears the hand guard. Mount the rings first (pushing forward as you lock them in place), then put the scope in them and tighten it down, then ensure you put the rings in the same slot and push them forward as you lock them down. Then obviously, re-zero the day scope.
Then I would assume the ARMS mount on the NV scope does have a repeatable zero. You might want to test it out.
I can't speak for Larue's rings, but their 1-piece mounts return to zero to less than 1/4 MOA every time for me. No adjustment needed taking it off and on repeatedly.
Try Larue.
I have an OBR and I use magnified optics on occasion. My day pack is set up to hold the scope when I throw my Aimpoint on instead. Both scopes have Larue throw lever mounts and niether requires rezeroing. I've been changing back and forth for over 2 years and I haven't had to adjust from my initial zero.

Right now I have this mounted:

I dont really mind spending the money as long as the product works and does what it promises. I'm going to look into the Larue mounts, someone else reccomended me to them as well.
This looks like it ia a rail that bridges the distance over the action of the M1A1. You would be OK to use a Larue mount here. The only issue I might see will be the hieght of the optic after its mounted. A one piece mount mounts just a tad higher than rings do and the M1 already mounts high as a weapons platform. You might be able to find someone in the hometown forum that has one near you that would allow you to see the mount to determine if you like it.
A Larue mount will cost around $200.00 shipped.

That rail should be fine.
As tbd1966 said, the 1 piece mounts are mostly designed for AR style platforms where the bore sits lower in line with the stock. This is not the case with the M1a. That's why I suggest looking at their rings. They have low model rings and hopefully, dependant on how big your objective bell is, they will work for you.
