Is it safe to fire 5.56 in this rifle?

Yes; it even says so in the manual.

yep, as long as you don't have the target version, which from what i've heard only takes .223. I've put 50 rounds of the old school Norinco through mine with no issues at all. Most of the older guys on here probably know that the Norinco was known to be loaded a little on the hot side. They're noticably louder than the Winchesters I also shoot, and most of the necks (throats to some people) came out bent and dented. I set up my camera to record me shooting and noticed that most of the rounds were flung out so fast that the necks were smacking into the operating rod on the way out after doing a 180* spin. They make the operating rod smack the receiver pretty hard on mine, but I might be in need of a new recoil spring.

5.56, especially M855, shoots extremely well out of the new Mini-14 Tactical models. Yes, Ruger uses a 5.56 NATO chamber reamer in the Mini-14.

Also shoots well out of my regular ranch rifle, too.

Although the only two kinds of ammo mine's seen so far were about 200 55-grain PMC Bronze and 420 rounds of that LC M855.

My carefully made milsurp-replica 5.56 ctgs are all I shoot from my pencil-barreled Mini, and I get 2 MOA on most days, a little better when the sun smiles on me.

I suppose If I made some rounds that were specifically tailored to the Mini, they would probably be a little more accurate than 2 MOA.

The Mini 14 (with the exception of the "Target model) have a "223 Wylde" chamber. They will accommodate 5.56....just be a little more careful of others standing to your right.
