I'm looking to put a synthetic stock on my Ruger M77 .300 WM. Most stock available are for M77 MKll, and although I am aware of most mechanical changes from the earlier model to the Mark ll, I was wondering if the stock changed and are they backwards compatible?

No they are not backwards compatible.
