My Garand is lonely... Help me plan an M14 / M1A purchase or build

I don't know squat about M1A rifles. I know slightly less about Garands, but I am learning slowly.

I want to make a M14 as my next big gun purchase later this year. I have a few questions listed below, but feel free to add any answers you don't see questions for.

What should I be considering?

What is the difference between say a Fulton Armory M14 and a Springfield Armory M1A?

How hard is it to build an M14 from parts? How much more expensive is it to build it yourseif from a barreled action?

What would I want to consider if I were wanting to use the rifle in CMP or amateur matches?

Thanks in advance.

It requires quite a few specialty parts to build an m14 from scratch. With a barreled receiver, it only requires a few like castle nut pliers for the flash hider. One option is to buy a parts kit from the CMP and then send it to 7.62mm firearms. I believe they offer a deal to build your cmp parts kit with a few of their parts (bolt, barrel, receiver) for a certain deal price. This is probably your best option as you will then have the closest thing to a real m14 that you can get. You will have all usgi m14 parts except for the barrel, bolt, and receiver.

Jon Wolfe is a heckuva stand up guy and will walk you through the process. In the end you will have a custom built M14 clone that you will be prous of.

www.m14raforum.org is another great M14 forum.
