M1 garand value?
I'm not very familiar with M1 garands at all so my knowledge of them is very limited. I recently won a Secretary of The Navy trophy rifle in this years navy matches and was wondering what the value of it would be. Is it more valuable, rare, sought after, etc. I have not yet received it in the mail but was told it will be the 30.06 caliber. Also, what are some things I should look for on the rifle to help determine the value (special marks, certain numbers, etc) Any help from you Garand Guru's will be very helpful, Thanks!
First you want to see if parts match. I'd recommend the CMP forums for that info. Those guys know everything about old surplus rifles.
Plenty of M1's around today are "mix masters". Very few are matching rifles. But check the CMP forums. Everything you need to know about M1 Garand's can be found there.
I don't know anything about them but my understanding is that the Secretary of the Navy Trophy Rifles are a class unto themselves because they are awarded for winning the match. It will most likely be a "mixmaster" but it is how it left the arsenal after rebuild. I don't know if it's specially marked or not but I wouldn't change anything on it.
You might be pleasantly surprised when you get it.
Check out this post from 2009.
I'd
keep everything you get with it, right down to the packing material.
A standard issue grade Navy Trophy rifle is worth $1200-1500. More if Winchester, H&R or IHC receiver.
What you will get will be a very nice fresh arsenal rebuild 30 cal M1 Garand, Generally they are O-65-66 marked on flat behind rear sight base.
Do not remove any of the grease pencil serial #'s. Leave it as is.
Keep all the paperwork and shipping box.

Great job. I assume you won a new shooter rifle. Are you active or reserve? I have won several of them and sold only one. Keep it as is due to the fact that it is worth more than a regualr M-1. If you want to shoot it do it or keep it as received. Are you going to Nationals? The price is anywhere between $1100 to $1500 depending on the orginal manufacturer.

Bear in mind that regarding 'parts matching' you're not going to see see a serial number that matches the bolt that matches the op rod that matches the barrel that matches the receiver. The simple fact is that only the receiver has a serial number, the rest of the parts are identified by drawing number and revision, which show when they were made, not if they are original to the receiver
if the bolt for example has a serial number, that's because somebody put it there after the rifle was manufactured, it's not 'factory'
