Who's done the folding charging handle conversion on their Metric FAL?
And was it was worth it in your opinion? I'm really working myself up to do this on my rifle, but a little unsure.
Pics would be a bonus also!
THX!
There is a guy on the Fal Files, Mountain Man maybe, that makes a folding handle that does not require mods to the receiver and is a US part. I have one of the older FSE ones on my Para and I love it.
Thinking of the same thing. ^this option is about $75 I believe.
Yes, its MountainMan on the FAL files. I ordered one a while ago and he does good work. FIt and function are great.
What's the advantage of a folding CH?
to me, the advantage would be no big knob digging into my back when slung. I don't do a lot of classes, but the few I have taken, this does become a factor. I will go looking at FAL Files tonight
tagged for info. about to finish up my woody fal, thinking of building a tacticool folder, and this seems like a good addition.

It's a pretty easy conversion to make an Inch folding cocking handle to fit on a metric upper.
If you provide the cocking handle I would do the conversion for $25 and that includes reparking it.
$55 if I provide the cocking handle.

Yeah, it's not difficult to convert one in the garage. The big reason MountainMan's handles are so popular is that they're US made and finely machined.
I changed mine to a folder . I did not like that giant knob hanging off to the side of such a sleek weapon . I got mine from a guy on the fal files but did not save his contact info

No problem replacing the part

Looking into it more...looks like the cocking handle bar is a bit thick...it needs to reduced by about .010 on the receiver side and the folding handle needs to be notched so it will lay flat on the receiver
I got time and little money, so I will include it in my latest franken Inch with metric receiver build
ETA just bought one on EE. Will advise down the road.
L/FN on the FalFiles comes up with them every once in a while. That's who I bought mine from, they do not add to the 922r count though.
In response to the question why to change: I like the knob not digging in my back when slung, it is sleeker looking, and I love the 50.63 look.

I just recently changed my rifle over to para lower also, so that is another driving force.
Not a hard conversion and look cool but many would think the metric knob handle is easier and faster to charge.

I concur with this and this was one of the pros for keeping it as is. Practice may be able to change that though.

The only advantage that the folding CH has over the fixed CH is that it does not dig into the shooter when slung across his back. Since I do not carry my FNs in that manner, and since the fixed is superior to the folder in every other aspect, I have fixed on all of my rifles.
Another side note: If a jam ever happens, one may have to hit the handle hard to open the bolt. The inch folder is not as strong as the metric konb style and may break, then it will be tricky to unjam your rifle!
I put a folding charging handle on one of my FAL builds. The build started as a metric STG58 demilled part set. I forget now who made the folding charging handle that I installed. It was a drop in part for a metric rifle. The lever was laready relieved to lay flat along the reciever. Never had any issues with it. I sold the rifle or I would send you pictures, when I get back from Afghanistan, that is. On one of my other builds I used a modified charging handle/bolt that act as a forward assist. This FAL I still have and can send you photos when I get back. I think I actually got the forward assist setup from TAPCO, of all places. I have a couple thousand rounds through this rifle and no issues so far. The forward assist charging handle looks like a standard metric charging handle unless you look at it really close. I like it, but honestly I have never needed it.
Last weekend I got my parts from APEX and modded the handle, not the receiver. Had to spray a lot of lube on the handle to get it to loosen up, some rust. Now it's smooth as can be and operates as it's suppose to. It is taking some getting use to. Slowed down mag changes a tad, but not as much as I had thought it would. I use to have an older Century L1A1 that had the same thing.
ETA: pics tonight when I get home.

How does it slow down the mag change

Look forward to the pics. I think what he means by the mag change is actually charging the mag.

this, the charging handle folded isn't as easy to grasp as the big knob, but still not that difficult either.
ETA pics
I have not refinished it yet, or even smoothed it out. This is just the rough.

Received and modified mine to fit metric receiver..
Not done with build yet.
Mountain Man just did a batch. Hasn't started mailing them yet. The price is $90? He may have some left.

yea, I was really tempted to go with his, but I spent $27 on mine, plus about 30 minutes of my time. I wanted to see if I could do it 1st, in the end I will probably go with one of his, I like perfection.

A nice feature on the folder is whenever you place it into the safe it's not crowding into the rifle next to it . The FAL's tuck up snug while the M1 and SKS tend to compete with the space next to them .
