How do I index a FAL muzzle brake?

I'm installing an original muzzle brake on a FAL barrel but I'm not sure how to index it. Does the notch in the back go in the six or 12 o'clock position?

6 o'clock position typically, but I've seen pics of factory Imbels with them in the 12 o'clock.

Yes, it is. I personally think they look odd with the notch at the 12 o'clock, but it still serves its purpose.
