Brand new PTR-91 is acting up
Well, it's not mine. It's my friends who is also on the boards. I figured I would ask for him since I am just as curious.
We went shooting it today for the second time. He said he had 100 rounds through the gun before I had a malfunction while shooting it.
Gun was ejecting sharply at about 15-20 feet at the 2 o'clock position. While we were policing brass, we noticed that the ejection pattern had steadily shortened in distance until the failure to eject happened.
We changed mags, no dice. Even loaded one round to see if we could get the bolt to lock back, no dice. Loaded a round into the chamber and released the mag and the gun still would not eject. I watch him shoot it and the bolt would come back about half way and then try to go back into battery.
Is the chamber fluting just gummed up with carbon after 100 rds????
Oh, we were shooting PRIVI. We thought that maybe it was downloaded or not hot enough to cycle the action after it getting dirty but that didn't seem to jive since it was running just fine though my FAL.
Thoughts???
Get a light and check the flutes out.
Never had a problem with Privi... You mean modern stuff?
When is the last time you cleaned/lubed it?
Tear the whole thing apart and check every piece of the bolt.
Is the rifle newer production or one of the older ones?

PTR91's don't have bolt hold open after last shot.
I had a early PTR91 (6xx) sn range & lost it's headspace gap & damaged thebolt & trunion after less than 300 rounds.
I would contact PTR about your buddy's guns issue.
brand new
Check the bolt gap and inspect the trunnion to make sure cracks havent formed. PTR had a batch of these guns go out with a trunnion issue. After a few rounds, the trunnion would crack and the bolt gap would close up and weird shit would happen.
Its not the flutes. Sometimes the ejector can get bent and ride on the bolt, causing all kinds of problems too. If your trunnion and bolt gap appear ok, look at the extractor spring and ejector. If youre positive the bolt is only going back halfway, its not the extractor, but the extractor spring is the most common issue on any roller HK.

yeah, it's only going back half way or not at all.
then it sounds like it might be a bent ejector or bent recoil spring rod.
maybe he bent the ejector when he took it apart? its a common enough mistake to make.

I don't think that's it. When he put the bolt back in at the range it slid forward without any hesitation.
More info, including bolt gap
here
With the trigger assembly / grip frame on the rifle, does the bolt smoothly cycle by hand? Check for dragging over the hammer.
Probably wouldn't hurt anything to run a patch in the chamber, look for rust or corrosion.
