How long to wait until buyer is considered a welcher?

I know from reading the rules here that communication is key in every deal you make. That said, I've been dealing with a buyer that has been a little difficult to communicate with. Here's where I stand.

- After finally working out the deal, the buyer stated (in IM) they would probably get the payment out (USPS MO) tomorrow afternoon (01/09/12)
- Buyer replies back on 01/12/12 stating the now have the MO but just need to get a stamp and envelope. On a side note, if the buyer was at the Post Office getting the MO, why didn't they get the stamp while they were there? That's not highly relevant but just something that caught my attention.
- Fast forward to yesterday, 01/18/12 and I have not received the MO. Buyer is in OK (according to profile) and I am in IL. Based upon all the other deals I have done recently, I should have already received the MO by now but I do not know when or even if the buyer has seen payment.
- After the mail arrived yesterday I sent the buyer an IM and an e-mail informing them that I have not received payment yet and to please advise. The buyer has not logged on since 01/16/12.

I know according to the rules here, the buyer should remit payment within a day or two after making the deal. I understand that life happens and sometimes everything doesn't go according to plan which is when communication comes into play which, as I first stated, has been less-than-ideal.

I'm not in a time critical situation, as far as selling my items goes but I also don't like fiddling around when it comes to closing deals either. To top it off, I initiated this deal when I contacted the buyer via their WTB post. It's taken over 2 weeks to get to this point meanwhile I have closed 8 other deals (as in received payment, sent product).

The buyer is new here and has virtually no history (no EE feedback and only 4 posts). I want to be fair about this to both the buyer and myself but at some point, push must come to shove and that point is getting very close IMHO.

I'd say try and wait 72 hours from your message stating that you have yet to receive payment and see if he gets back to you.

That sounds reasonable. Thank you for your input.

Yep, that's a good timeframe.

FWIW, SHOT show is this week, might be worth waiting until that ends in case he's stuck out in LV.

Eh, I'm waiting until 1639 Sunday 01/22 and, if no reply by then, I'm done.

Buyer never mentioned anything about SHOT or any other reasons why they could not follow through in a timely manner. I have no time to mess around with people that don't pay promptly or don't communicate.

I would say that you have waited long enough. I would relist and give a negative.

About 3 weeks ago (right before Christmas), I told a seller that I would take a 10/22 stock and barrel that he had for sale. He said that he would box it up and drop it in the mail the day that he got the money. I had sent him my address in my first pm so I thought that everything was good to go.

On the Monday after Christmas, the post office was closed. On Tuesday at 8:30, I was at the post office and mailed the m.o. out. When I got home, I pm'd him and told him that it was on the way. He pm'd me and told me that he had sold it....also, he said that he had priced it too low to sell and ship for the price that he had listed.

Was I pissed? You bet! The money order had to go to North Carolina and then get sent back. Then to top it off, he sat on it for 3 or 4 days because he said that he couldn't read the return address.

I had followed up exactly as I promised and got cheated (as far as I am concerned).

Then the guy had the gonads to tell me that "he would accept a negative feedback from me". Accept? Are you kidding me? Talk about deserved in no uncertain manner.

Anyway, that was a situation where I as a buyer did exactly as I should and got jerked by the seller.

In your case, you may have missed someone wanting to buy your item (like me) that was money in hand and the transaction would have been already done. I don't care if he is at the SHOT show or sitting in a cell in Alcatraz, when you say that you are going to do something, follow through.

Otherwise, it is just another Obama promise.

If what you listed transpired on here you need to post that in a negative if you haven't done so already. Sellers like that don't need to be here.

Bah, I've decided my patience is at its end. Today's mail came and went - no payment from the buyer, no reply to my e-mail, and no reply to my IM (user still hasn't logged on since 01/16/12. Unless the payment arrives tomorrow, I relisted the items for sale.

Based upon the length of time it has taken other buyers to get their payments to me (via 1st class mail), this buyer's payment should have arrived a few days ago. At this point, I feel giving them one more day is generous enough.

I understand that life happens and sometimes one cannot follow through on one's obligations. If that happens, you need to communicate the situation so other parties can react accordingly and hopefully diminish their inconvenience. Worst case, you cannot communicate your situation and have to live with the consequences of your inaction.

Either way, life happens and life goes on. Now I just need to determine how to report a welcher, should it come to that.

Post a negative feedback thread, if he comes forward and show receipts/MO stubs great, otherwise....

He just replied to my IM and stated he mailed out the payment on Tuesday 01/17/12 which means the payment should be here tomorrow. I received an MO from Washington state in 3 days via 1st class mail so it shouldn't take longer to get from Oklahoma to Illinois.

I'm a bit more educated on how to deal with WTB posts now. If I ever reply to one again, I'm going to make darn sure the person is ready to buy right now.

Whether or not this deal goes down, the buyer has not handled it well IMHO.

I was wondering this as well. I had a buyer post that he would buy a rifle I posted for sale. He posted on the 18th,and I have yet to receive a IM or email, and he has been online since then.

Interesting. Have sent an IM and e-mail to this person?

Personally, I consider a deal made when I have confirmed everything (final price, shipping amount, shipping method and my mailing address). On the other hand, when someone replies to your WTS post with "I'll take it" that sets the wheels in motion. Imagine if folks just posted "I'll take it" willy nilly in assorted WTS threads - things would get messy real quick and it also can dissuade others from wanting to buy it.

If he doesn't contact and you want the "i'll take it" removed so others don't think it sold already give me a link to the ad and I'll take care of it for you.
