Open Carry Holster
Since i came to this side of the site i learnt a few things including open carry while, going to or coming from fishing, hunting, etc. Since i have a boat i want to exercise that right i have to open carry while on it, anyways i need some advice on holsters OWB or a leg holster i guess i dont know, what is your take on this?? What would be best? Waist or leg? Tactical holster or leather? Thanks
Blackhawk Serpa. I like the waist Serpa w/ the paddle. You can also get the Serpa in a leg drop too.

Waist... Leg drop is really for people that want to *look* tactical unless they just happen to be carrying a primary weapon and a bunch of mags, radio's, blowout kits...etc.... You know actually BEING tactical.
I'd make sure there is some sort of retention device.... It would suck to bend over and have your gun drop into the water..... Ask me about a 1911 lying at the bottom of govt cut.

how long ago? stainless?
I'd go for a simple OWB on-your-belt Kydex holster.
It retains well, draws good, and is weather resistant. Plus, some are concealable as well, if you choose to do so.
A simple Glock holster for instance:

Stainless Colt 3 years ago..... Not mine, a buddies. He was taking his boat from Fisher Island to the mainland. When he left he had it, when he arrived he didn't.

I don't oc but a high leg holster is a pretty natural draw position. I'm not sure I would hate on it so quickly.
Many argue *against* the use of SERPA variations due to the operation placing your finger in a curved pressure position to draw, which can and has led to accidental discharges. Something to keep in mind.
I'm with Monkey_Wrench, either a tight fitting kydex holster or a good retention holster like the safariland 6377 ALS holster. I'd also strongly consider a lanyard if I were carrying on board a boat.
I prefer kydex over leather, I have a comp-tac kydex owb that i love and its adjustable by screws so you can set your desired amount of retention.
I used a Glock factory holster the last time I went fishing. Comfortable and good retention. A kydex belt holster would be my preference. A lanyard is not a bad idea as well.

/thread
this came to mind for your application
id try them both, and see whats more comfortable for you, which one you bump into things less with etc. owb or leg.

These would be my top two choices as well.

I wear a Serpa, and I don't have to curve my finger to release the retention clip. I use the same draw motion for my serpa holster as I do for a kydex. The index finger is fully extended along the frame rail and releases the clip, no bending or excessive force needed. IMHO, people who are drawing the gun and experiencing NDs have poor trigger finger discipline!
Sorry to derail this thread, but the retention of my serpa was confirmed the other day when a detective tried to "disarm me" when I was exposed instead of alerting me to the exposure. He tugged on my gun but it stayed put until I removed it for him...

The Serpa's true fault is it's mounting. I have seen others rip off serpa holsters off the paddle mount in training retention with blue guns. Just pull/twist/yank in a fluid motion and those three shallow little screws are toast. Fobus is another that I have seen the same thing, but I'm unsure of what exactly the failure is on them. I used to have Serpa's as well and ditched them mainly because of the mounting situation.
OP there are dozens of kydex manufacturers out there. As most guys who do a lot of carrying open and concealed will tell you, I have a box full of holsters that did and didn't work out for me. G-Code, Raven Concealment, Crown Holsters, Andrew's Custom Leather...list goes on. Try looking on the EE and finding them on the cheap and see what works for you. I'd also consider getting a quality belt as well.

There's a "stupid cop almost got shot" story to go with it...

hahahaha thats funny and i am sorry for your loss, i'd be pissed!!! I'll make sure not to bend around govt cut just to be safe. Yeah the leg holster was just throwing it out there to see what you guys think, anyways i always wear beach trunks when im fishing because i always end up throwing myself overboard to cool off after spending the whole day in the water.
Yeah i agree with the Kydex holster. I'll start looking around!! Thanks gents!!
Kydex is great, but snug is not enough. Safariland or Serpa.
Without retention, you may be back someday telling us about your boating accident!
ETA: What gun?
Gcode... You want retention, get the XST....
Or safariland..
Smith & Wesson M&P Shield for now until i can get the HK P30

That is my holster, (thanks M_W) it really tucks the gun in to your body. Yet it is easy to get to and comfy.
Note, wearing only a t-shirt on a motorcycle it becomes OP real fast.
Safariland for retention. Raven or Comp-tac if not.
No real reason not have a full retention holster on a pitching vessel. It's not like anyone's going to sneak up behind you and catch you by surprise.

I open carry every time I'm going fishing, (specially at 5am in some shady gas stations in North Miami) but once I'm on my boat I take the gun and place it into a water prof container... saltwater is a killer... I also suggest for you to print a copy of the law, many PoPo's do not know about it and you will find yourself facing down the pavement...

I CC but this is what I do as well. I have an orange waterproof pelican that my wallet, cell phone, truck keys, hand held VHF, and pistol all go in. If we need to ditch its easy to grab.

I like it, is the pelican a case? and Yes i will print the law just in case, you never know!! I spoke to a marine SFW officer a few days ago and he confirmed that it is legal, he was actually picking up the boat from the FDOT yard.
yes a
Pelican case. I use a 1200 (I think).

Cool. Thanks TallHunter
I use a Safariland 6004 that I've modified using
ITS Tactical's guide. I choose the 6004 because I wanted a very secure holster.

Good read, thanks
I've noticed a lot more citizens doing the open carry in public lately. Does anybody ever hassle you over it?
Well when i spoke to the FWC officer the thing he mentioned was not to forget and open carry while stopping at walmart on your way to fishing, by law they cant really do anything since you are going fishing but is a stupid move which will also put the law under a microscope.......
When i start open carrying mine i will let you know if i get hassled!!!
I wonder how well the spring(s?) in a sherpa will hold up to a saltwater environment. I really think kydex is the way to go for a waterborne holster, but I think a thumb break retention device might be a better choice...although, come to think of it, the snap will eventually corrode, rust, whatever.
Perhaps a WW II tanker shoulder holster (the M3, not the M7) would fit the bill. For those who don't know, think of the holster Robert Conrad wore in Blacksheep Squadron. That is about as OC as you can get.
