 Going to NAU!

This fall and I'd like to get the low down on rental properties and any helpful general info about Flagstaff. I'm looking at possibly renting on campus housing but no weapons/ammo allowed makes it tough. Any neighborhoods to avoid? Ive got 1 vehicle for our family so I'd prefer to be within walking distance of campus but not live in a mini-dorm/frat house. I need a 2 or 3 bedroom unit minimum. We'll be moving out there in mid August so any info would be greatly appreciated!

ps - And yes I am gathering the supplies now for the required ammo tax to Rizzo~!!!

San Marcos - north San Diego county. Only red blooded part of the state left...

Walking distance leaves you some town homes behind the Pizza Hut (a lot of students there, basically like the dorms), University Heights to the west which is a bit further of a walk, Brannen Holmes to the east which isn't the best neighborhood, the southside to the north, amongst a few others. The student to resident ratio thins out the further you get from campus, apartments, and town homes.

700 S. Blackbird Roost. Apartments are convenient to central campus.
It's just across Milton Rd.
It's been 15 years, so not sure how nice they are today.
It was a great location for walking or riding a bike onto campus back then.

nau sucks ..

there prices are outrageous now, hope your not planning on driving to campus, or parking near campus but not on it.. places will tow you if your not in their establishment and park there then go to nau..

For a 2-3 bedroom place that puts you out of apartments, most if not all apartments only go to 2 bedroom..

VERY Expensive..

for a 2 bedroom your looking at minimum 1k a month for a basic apartment.

For a 3 bedroom house your gonna be probably looking at 1500 and up..

avoid sunny side, its the area between downtown and the mall.. east side of town..

August is good time to move as more places are available, but look a couple months before, most good places have waiting lists to move in..

Walking is fine, but i would at least recomend a bike.. The only people that say walking is not a big deal is the people that dont have cars, most anywhere to go is gonna be a couple miles or your riding a dirty expensive bus

Have fun spending lots of money for minimal actual education

Sounds like someone's a little bitter about their chosen major...

As a NAU graduate, I can say there is a heavy liberal leaning, but that's any university these days. Stay away from Sunnyside, it may sound cheap but there's a reason for that. More crime and gang activity in that area.

Walking distance is going to depend on whether your major's school is on North or South campus. If its South, Highland Village isn't too far of a walk, but when it snows it may get a bit tedious. They were decent but a bit expensive. Anything close to campus is going to be expensive, whether its a house or apartment. I stayed at some cheap, decent apartment complexes, but unfortunately most that I stayed at were about a 10 minute drive away, so they'd be a bit too far for a walk. The savings in rent made up for the cost of gas for me. The good thing about Flag is that it shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes to get from one side to the other if you take the right roads. Good luck and make the most out of your degree and your time at NAU.

Yeah, it's still better than ASU or UofA when it comes to cost. An ASU parking permit for lot 59 costs 200 bucks, and is farther from my classes than my apartment is. I have serious issues with paying 200 a year to park and then having to walk a mile and a half to my classes.

Tuition will also be about 1000 (maybe more) cheaper than the big schools. My little sister is going to NAU come fall. I looked into the prices myself before ASU cut me a giant check.

Permits cost more than that when they are available, I dont believe any are left this year,

High rates of vandalism , my truck was hit several times to the tune of thousands of dollars out of pocket cost,

Nau pd and the flagstaff courts dont do much with that kind of stuff, and if it involves a minor your never going to see it paid back..

Im bitter about the school because of things they have done, i believe i am getting ready to send my 9th copy of transcripts from coconino over to them so that they might consider processing my degree..

The parking services will ticket you for being in your designated spot and tell you tough titties if you try to appeal it, yet if you are friends with anyone that works there they will throw out any ticket..

Gets really old all the aggressive homeless people in the town,

people love riding their bikes in the middle of the damn road, or just cutting in and weaving in and out of areas.. The campus is 10x worse for this but the town is still very bad.

There are also benefits of flagstaff, i personally love the town. But jobs are hard to find, pay is low, turnover is high etc..

I would still go there if i had to do it again, but i would never consider continuing my education there for masters work. If i go that route i will be going elsewhere

also for students the optimal apartment is one of the LIPS properties, they have a couple units on the north end for liberal arts type majors, or science majors,

then they have one or two on south end that is right next to campus next to the business building, criminal justice building, and the other ones..

They are also all dog friendly and all inclusive on the rent including internet and cable

$200 a year for parking would have saved me $250 at one point at the UofA, and I had to walk too.

OP, just watch your cornhole when it comes to NAU's gened requirements WRT cultural diversity/global worlds, intensive writing, etc. They won't accept transfers for those types of classes and they make them senselessly difficult.

I'm well accustomed to ridiculous rental prices now.
& I do have a mountain bike that I could use to go to campus so that'd work.
The wife & I will be out for the NAU orientation the last weekend of April. So we will be checking out the area. April can still be pretty cold out there right?

Yes, it can be. We often get snow in April but this year has been unseasonably warm aside from the last couple of days. Pack warm clothes.

I've paid about 3000 in tuition. I used to be paid 1500 a year when I first got the scholarship. Tuition has gone up a lot, and I don't see the trend changing for awhile. Since the financial crisis, ASU has needlessly built several buildings and just decided to replace the tennis courts with a new business school building. It gets annoying.

that seems to be a trend, the local high school just got a massive facelift, but there's no money for books

oh thats right! I heard Brewer shot down the 1st version of this bill last year. How is it looking with regards to passing this go around? I wonder if that would cover only carrying on campus and/or storage in campus housing?

Capital projects are funded differently than operations, and often as a tool to spread money on union jobs as vote payback.
