In Mesa for a week. Tips?

Howdy,

Hanging out in Mesa with my inlaws this week. Have my boys, ages 12 and 15, and access to a car. A few years back I found the Usury Mountain gun range by luck, but are there any other ranges in this area that I should look at? Any with rentals available? Not looking to shoot a lot, but I thought the boys would like a nice "guy's only" side trip away from the 55 & better community my inlaws live in.

Thanks in advance!

Rio Salado (the range in Usery Mtn area) is the best of the best of the outdoor ranges here IMO. It's also the closest to where you are at. As for rentals, if you want to rent cool stuff, you can't beat the selection at Scottsdale Gun Club (SGC) as they have a huge amount of rental guns including full auto if you wish to shell out the $$$.

Caswell's is ok for a little get away and rentals if you don't want to go to Scottsdale.

Into hiking? Hit up camelback mtn or the superstitions.

They aren't old enough for booze, babes, or cigars, so that ends my list of places to recommend......

Thanks! The boys have been there on previous trips, but I think we'll all head there tomorrow. Going to head to Caswell's today, for a look see.

On another note, saw that Dillon Precision is only 20 miles away. Do they have an on-site store where you can just walk in and buy supplies? As long as we are out and about I think I might head up there if there is an actual store front.

We'll be spending more time down here as time goes on, so suggestions are helpful. I think tomorrow we're heading out for a hike near Usury Mtn. Dang this place is flat. Much warmer though. Eventually I'll take a CCW class if they allow out-of towners to carry. Plenty of time for that.

No CCW permit to carry here. If you can legally own a gun, you may CCW with no permit. A drive up the Apache Trail to Apache Lake is a great drive. Lots of places to pull over and hike. I like Fishcreek for hiking. There's a nice spot to park and you can hike up the creek bed. Very scenic and NOT flat at all.

CCW, meaning "concealed?" Really? Cool if that is the case.

Thanks folks! Successful day today.

Went to Dillon and picked up a few items and met the owner's dog. They were too busy for a tour but the shop was clean and staff was helpful.

Then we went to US Auto weapons and had a nice look around. Nice selection of goodies, well staffed, and professional.

Finally we went next door for some trigger time and rented an MP5. My 15 year old had fired a few of these before and he did well. My 12 year old hadn't fired a full auto before and the mg instructor Mike K was great with Ryan. Of course, we chose zombie targets, and I'm proud to say the boys won the battle with some good head shots. The store was very well staffed, clean, selection was good with lots of ammo. The range was great and the staff was great with my boys.

Thanks for the heads up and suggestions! It will be a while before our full auto perma grins are gone.

Took a hike this morning up to the wind caves with the boys near Usery Mtn. Made it all the way to the top past the signs. Neat view, but still flat compared to where we live. Stopped by Rio Salado. Not much going on.
