I was just down at Surplus Ammo and they had a flyer hanging with details on what had gone missing, some serious optics. The posted reward is $10,000.

I remember hearing about instances like this in the past, usually when some pvs/nvg gear went missing

I remember a few years ago a geocacher confided in me that he was out looking for a geocache and spotted an ammo can in a hollow stump. Not unusual, as ammo cans are common containers, and stumps are common hiding places. He said he pulled the can out and it was unusually heavy, and more surprising, there was another two beneath it. He found several bags of other gear hidden in the area as well. He took three or four cans of 9mm home. I advised him to (at least) notify the Ft. about the other gear.

So that's where my sht went!

Just kidding... I don't miss this shit either... when my bn came back from Somalia we had a number of lock downs, for "lost" stuff, and "found" stuff...

Yay!

Nothing like being locked down!

Last time it happened to me, it was a missing M-16a2 service rifle.

Had a 6 hour formation once while the camp was searched for a missing Ka-Bar.

Once did hands across the desert for a missing M60 at Ft. Irwin... turned out it was an OC that took it off a vehicle in the middle of the night and stashed it some place the unit had not been... only he forgot to turn off his tracker

For a knife?! Holy Shit! I'd thought those things were consumables. We almost lost our Thanksgiving 96 once because we lost a screwdriver. Now this is a big deal, my unit being AirWing and all, but we were about a mile from the flightline and my unit was I level which meant we didn't even work directly on the damn birds! Cooler heads prevailed and we went home after 8 hours of searching and formations. Found out later it was in a SSGTs coveralls. He found it when he went home......

Best part, is at the time, Ka-Bars were issued to people who get an M9. M9's got issued to staff NCO's and Officers. The knife was on the armory sight count, and no one gets cut loose till the counts in. I took a detail to search the motor pool, and it was found in the visor of a gun truck.

Lame part was, this was 2-3 months after float, and we were supposed to be on a "down cycle" and not training.

Getting a 96 kanked over a tool would be fucked!

This was a LOT of stuff. Into the dozens of items. And expensive stuff. Not just M68s and NVGs, but also thermals.
CID is offering a $10k reward for it.

Anyone want to take a stab in the dark on the retail value for everything on that list that is missing? I'm going to say > $250k.

My question is where the fuck was this shit secured? I've been out quite awhile now, but we used to keep sensitive items in the Arms Room, which back in the day you had to get the keys from Bn. Who the fuck was on CQ? Or do they even have CQ anymore? Please tell me it wasn't in the Supply Room, or worse yet the Day Room

Summer of 1983, Grafenwoehr training Area, another unit lost an M16A1, we were at Camp Kasserine, all our weapons accounted for. Mustered us out of the movie Theater / Snack Bar to go help look for it. 3 days of single arm interval across the firing points, I don't think they ever found it.

NWCN just said it is $600,000 worth of gear. Someone replaced the lock on the arms room, when they got the new lock off and looked in, the gear was gone.
jdhill  [Team Member]

It's been a while, but I recall the locks on arms rooms were a specific type, and being controlled items themselves... on top of being alarmed, so you had to call when you opened the door...

When I was in, we had a sister company lose a frag at the range and they were locked down in the field for 3 weeks IIRC, They road marched 12 miles to the barracks every other day for showers and then marched the 12 miles back to the range. They eventually found the grenade at the range and we laughed and laughed until a Soldier in my Company tried to steal an M-9, then it was out turn to pay. But we were young and hard and after all, "pain is just weakness leaving the body"

That about figures... if true, new CO, new XO, new arms room officer, new supply sergeant, and new armorer. And if I was a general officer for a day, new CID commander for I corps for pulling the panic button and notifying the public about the Charlie Foxtrox. I remember back in the day when "misplacing" a sensitive item would get you Kowlolafoied for hours on the nearest telephone pole.

Arms room locks are not something one can remove and swap (sign for the key) or take a bolt cutter to and cut off. Plus alarms.

I was told that the items were in a container, lock was cut on the container and off it went. Happened during the holidays and half day schedule, so seeing some schmuck out in a yard while you are driving by, one would think, sucks to be him as they hurry to beat the traffic at the gate.

Latest command and shaft meeting said that the items were taken from the Arms Room Office of Building 3215. Could see the above happening.

I got a call from CID because some asshole called them and said I was trying to sell an Eotech.

It would have been nice if they did their homework though, as I had posted pictures WITH the serial number in the for sale ad...

Grrrr...

Then I had to explain to my boss why, in the middle of installing a 6k$ radio into a state vehicle, I was getting a call from CID....

Residences? Sounds like he either already sold some of it pretty quickly, or had accomplices.
