 School the new Nevada resident

Some of yall might remember a couple of my previous post about moving to Reno... Well... I'm here

First question (although I think I pretty much have the answer, I would like to hear from the resident experts):

Loaded open carry of both rifles and handguns is essentially legal in the entire state of Nevada correct?
(For instructional purposes, I'm not refering to anything near Las Vegas, nor am I refering to entering any casinos/gov buildings/schools/ ect... just generally speaking, parks, trails, open area, ect.)

Second question:

I'm considering selling a few firearms. What is the choice legal method of private sales? It seems to me that technically, you could sell a gun to joe blow that you met at the store and it would be legal? Although I totally dig the newly awarded discrection if I decided to sell a firearm to a close friend or family member... I'm not sure if I could sell a firearm "cash and carry" to someone I really don't know.... Does anyone else here do any type of transfer process when selling to some body they dont know?

Open Carry legal
If you are a Nevada Resident you can sell your guns to another Nevada Resident. Interstate transfer of guns is no go regardless of the guns or states involved

My criteria for private sale is just a gut check. You can always do a bill of sale with both names on it.

Just an FYI on the loaded longguns:

NRS 503.165 Carrying loaded rifle or shotgun in or on vehicle on or along public way unlawful; exceptions.
1. It is unlawful to carry a loaded rifle or loaded shotgun in or on any vehicle which is standing on or along, or is being driven on or along, any public highway or any other way open to the public.
2. A rifle or shotgun is loaded, for the purposes of this section, when there is an unexpended cartridge or shell in the firing chamber, but not when the only cartridges or shells are in the magazine.
3. The provisions of this section do not apply to paraplegics, persons with one or both legs amputated or who have suffered a paralysis of one or both legs which severely impedes walking, or peace officers and members of the Armed Forces of this State or the United States while on duty or going to or returning from duty.
(Added to NRS by 1969, 1367; A 1971, 1542; 1981, 321; 1987, 596)

As for private sales, I agree on the 'gut check', but I find myself always on the 'buy' end and not the 'sell' end. If you have nice ones to sell, might I suggest the Equipment Exchange? Give the local arfcommers first chance?

I know it goes against principles, but if you open carry around town, you will end up getting hassled sooner or later (even though its perfectly legal). If you dont already have one, a CCW permit is your friend !

Some non gun friendly advice. Learn to pronounce Nevada correctly. You will be instantly recognized as an outsider if you mispronounce Nevada. Hint it is not how most morons in the National News Media pronounce it.

Thanks for the replies and welcomes,

I do plan on getting my CCW as soon as possible, but from everyone I've talked to so far, sounds like the wait is up to 120 days, and they're taking every bit of it. I'm more concerned about open carry when I'm out hiking or walking my dogs on the hillside.

I'm pretty sure I've always pronounced Nevada correctly.... Washoe County... not so much

Also the EE is at the top of my list if/when I do sell any of my guns.

If you're going to carry your AR in the truck with a full mag in, don't lock the bolt back. You might hit a bump and chamber a round...

Ooops!

Very good point.

You would be surprised at how many AR owners there are who don't know that.

For FTF private sales, be very careful that you're not dealing with someone from California, or someone who recently moved here and hasn't established residence yet. I've sold a few handguns, and I had many inquiries from people who couldn't produce a Nevada ID for one reason or another, and didn't understand the law. I don't think it's out of line to ask a buyer (or a seller) to see their ID before exchanging payment. Also, be careful at the gun shows. I'm not sure about lately, but the Big Reno show was apparently being trolled pretty hard by the ATF looking for private sales that were being done with out-of-state buyers. No proof of this, just hearsay.

Wah-Show.

On FTF sales, I go with known to me or CCW check. If they have a CCW, I consider them G2G. Start the CCW process as soon as you can, because of the 120 days that they're stretching.

Another bit of helpful advice is, you don't own the left lane on the freeways. If someone is coming up going faster than you, move over...

AMEN!

It should be legal to use missiles against those people that pace each other blocking both lanes for miles!

If I'm doing the speed limit in a construction zone, and traffic is heavy, and you want to fly up behind me, I'm not getting over for you, and I'm not getting a ticket for you. This kind of bullshit is getting ridiculous in Reno lately. Slow the fuck down.

Construction zones are a little different animal however most of the ones here in Reno never seem to have anyone working in them. They should be like school zones and only restricted when there is actually someone working in them.

...or you could just stay out of the left lane and avoid that potential problem all together.

be wary of the crotch rocket riders with the faux-hawks on their helmets. They are lead to believe the more times they change lanes, the better off they are.

Had a douche bucket doing close to 100mph that was zipping in and out of traffic on the 215 scrape the side of my car due to his douche-baggedness. He almost went down, had he, I am sure the 30 or so people he flipped off would have been sure to stop and help.

Welcome to NV, but keep in mind open loaded carry in North Las Vegas is against the rules, which is dumb as it is one of the places you want to have it.

CCW all the way.

Wasn't talkin' about construction zones...Just the freeways in general. I can't tell you how many idiots are going under the limit in the left lane and don't give a darn if there is a line behind them. If you are one of them, then get out of the left lane. If you are going the limit and someone is coming up faster than you, common road courtesy dictates that you move over. the left lane is the passing lane, not the domain of california transplants who don't want to assimilate.

omfg it is even worse in cali
i can't even stand to go with my gf to visit her folks just because of the morons in the left lane and then they have thee reduced speed limit for trucks in the right lane so ridiculous. You would think people would understand to get over when your like 2 ft behind them. Vegas has nothing compared to the 99 through cali

What he said.

CA DOJ agents also troll the gunshows in Reno. They are primarily looking for CA residents trying to buy firearms and large capacity magazines. They follow CA residents back to CA and then arrest them after they cross into CA. If the CA residents bought any firearms FTF from NV residents, they notify BATFE about the illegal transfers (Federal laws prohibits firearm transfers between non-licensed residents of different states, unless the transfer is done through a FFL dealer in the recipiant's state of residence). Last time CA DOJ did this was in 09-2011. They arrested 4 CA residents that bought large capacity magazines & firearms at a Reno gunshow and arrested them once they got back to CA.

I see a lot of natives doing the same thing, though. a few Renoites claim that there is no "fast lane" or "passing lane" in NV...just "lanes". I think they all had the same driver's ed teacher who taught them all to come to a complete stop before making a turn and to turn to the left and sweep in a big arc when turning right.

Then there's the oregon transplants who go 10mph under the speed limit because oregon cops used to feed speeders into woodchippers, feet first.

Dam Mike , and here I thought that was only reserved for the Vegas drivers of SUV's, H3's and other " Off the Road, Never leave the road" vehicles. Guess these guys all THINK they are driving a big rig.

Nothing like showing off the skills they honed at Big Ed's Tractor-Trailer Academy while in their Hyundai!
