This may sound a little weird, but....

Do we know anyone in the Plymouth/Maple Grove area who is a former SEAL, SF, etc.? Bona-fide?

Also, what, if any, GOOD places are there in the area that teach some good carbine, pistol, etc. ?

All these years, and the only training I've had has been behind a bench.

Thanks.

Well...

Send me a private message about the training angle. It's going to get a little weird indeed.

The only former SEAL I know and is public about it is Larry Yatch. He and his wife run Sealed Mindset in Crystal.

As far as the training goes. I've taken several classes from The Defensive Edge. I will definitely be back for more this year.
The range is located in Princeton. From your home you should be able to get there in about an hour.

I am a bona fide member of Walrus Team Six. Can't really discuss it online, though...

+1 for Defensive Edge carbine and pistol training.

I've met two other members. There was some talk of getting a patch made.

ETA (Two that I know of)

Defensive Edge doesn't have any shooting classes scheduled this year. Someone know something I don't?

The calendar often does not get updated until March. Contact Sully directly with any inquiries

http://www.sealedmindset.com ? I heard the guy that runs it on KFAN the other day talking about Act of Valor. Seems like a pretty cool dude. It is in New Hope.

Finally have a moment to reply...

First off, thanks to those who were so kind as to send me friendly and useful IM's. I hope to reply to each of you in time.

What I'm looking for is three things:

1) I wish to become far more practically proficient with my guns. I have never taken a "real" firearms course, and certainly nothing like a Carbine course. I want to develop the skills and confidence to be able to bring a carbine and a handgun to bear if needed in an effective manner. This would include practical applications such as shooting around vehicles,on the move, etc. I don't want just another bench-based course.

2) I wish to learn skills that could be loosely described as "survivalist" or something along those lines. Much like the proficiency discussed in 1) above, I want to learn the proper techniques of living off the land, maintaining an appropriate situational awareness, basic self-defense, first aid, etc.

3) Finally, I wish to get into some semblance of shape where 1) and 2) could be brought into practice with some hope of being effective.

Now, I want to clearly state that I have no expectations of becoming a SEAL or anything resembling one. After all, I'm over 40, fat, out of shape, blind without my glasses, with a bad back. What I DO want to achieve is to be able to be in the best shape I've ever been, to be as prepared as I've ever been, and to therefore have confidence such as I've never had.

The reason I ask for the whole SEAL angle is that I'm former Navy and I figure learning all of this from a fellow shipmate would be fun. That said, I'd be honored to learn it from any properly-qualified person who would be willing to take an old squid under their wing...

I wish to do nothing illegal with anything I learn, and I sure as hell am not preparing to go to war with anyone on a formal basis. All of this is very above-board. My biggest problem is that it has been a LONG time since I had the self discipline to do this alone, and the fact is that some of the information can only be learned from those who learned it because tier lives depended on it. If they happen to teach me some juicy stuff without being able to tell me when or where it was used, that will be fun, too.

So there it is...

Now let me go look at the links provided above.

Am I the only guy having trouble with the website?

I'm sure they're just updating the website.

Their new facility opens on the 18th? So I'm sure they're prepping for more new things.

I plan on taking some classes at SealedMindset this spring/summer.

DefensiveEdge is certainly worth every penny for their handgun-1 class.
I have ZERO regrets having spent the time/effort to get my initial training from Sully's excellent staff.

My reasons for not signing up for another class this year:
- Really far out of town
- Outdoors when I want to start practicing indoor instructions/training
- Certain people in class are a distraction
