too early for deer ticks???
we did a job yesterday clearing out some woods for my customer, I woke up this morning and scratched my side and thought "damn, one of those buckthorn trees musta got me"
take off shirt and pull out thorn... thorn is actually a wood tick. hopefully not a deer tick? the area around where he dug in is red like a blood blister- about the size of a pencil eraser....
do you guys need to start calling dibs on guns, or is the mark around the area just from that little fucker being moved around as i tossed and turned all night?
Wait and see if you develop the "bullseye". Here is a decent pic:
I've had 2 that looked like that. If you start to see that, get to your Doc. Make sure you DON'T wait for a positive test before starting anti-biotics. Find a different Doc if yours doesn't agree.
I've had 2 bullseyes (one from hunting and one from golfing - shows you what kind of a golfer I am) and my GP was very good about giving me a prescription prior to the test results.

thank you ! I couldnt remember exactly how the mark / bullseye looked and for all i knew the mark i had was it. ill keep a very close eye on it.
thanks again !
You should have saved the tick to get it identified.
This early in the year I would say it was most likely a deer tick. You don't always get the bullseye rash.
I would head to the Doc ASAP. Around here Lymes has been a major problem. A wife of a local Doctor is wheelchair bound because of it. I won't even start on the stories of just friends and relatives that have fought it. Based on what you've said I would insist on a round of doxycycline. Don't take a chance.
Remember that deer ticks are a lot smaller than the standard wood tick.
I thought if you got it off within 24 hours you were pretty safe
I wouldn't wait. I would be on my way to get it looked at RFN.
My uncle had lymes twice, It was not pretty.
How big was the tick?
http://www.canlyme.com/ticks.html some comparisons there

Seriously, when talking about Lymes, pretty safe isn't something to gamble on. Just the act of pulling off an attached tick can cause the disease to be transmitted.
There are other diseases showing up with regularity as well, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis. My Dad has had anaplasmosis twice in the last two years.
typically they say it needs to be stuck for more than 24 hours and of course not all of them are carriers. Whenever i have one that is stuck pretty good I end up just bringing it in to the doctor so they can verify it's a deer tick and then I get the antibiotics. better to be safe than all limey
Prepare your anus.
Dibs on guns. And your truck.
Dibs on your Chainsaws!
i actually DID save the tick, taped that little bastard to himself lol. suck on that bitch ! the body of him seems to be more tan than dark brown like i recall ticks usually being

he was latched in good, but, didnt fill up at all so i dont know how long he was there for sure, and it was less than 24 hours
deer ticks are TINY there should be no mistaking them for wood ticks
its definitely the "female black legged tick" thats compared next to the dime....
Another think to mention. The rash does not always appear I have had lymes 3 times and never had the rash. Just saw this news story apparently if it is above 50* ticks can be active.
Rant: I HATE WOOD TICKS AND SKEETERS!!!!!
This has been a rant from me.... please return to your normal lives.
Anyway, while on topic, what is the best stuff to keep ticks off dogs? I have tried many things, but my basset keeps getting ticks all over. Most notably her ears. She has constant access to our woods.
We have always used front line. My husky didn't get a single tick with that stiff. We live in the country she got lots of woods and field time
We've had the best luck with Frontline too. There is a new product out this year called Certifect, it is supposed to have a faster kill time. Haven't talked to our vet about it yet though.
No, not too early for them. Also, this year might be very bad for ticks, and fleas for those with the four legged companions. Our severely lacking version of winter made for early wake up calls for all the problem bugs. I had the reaction to deer-tick lyme reaction, but was not the typical bullseye appearance, was a very large round rash, with the outside border being whiter than my normal skin color. Not the red-white-red standard one you see. But it is noticeable enough to make you concerned enough to go see a doc.
I really think we need to declare war on the mosquito's and ticks.
To the OP, bulltoughf250: You don't happen to work for Barr do you?
TazDevil- No I do not work for Barr, I own my own tree removal business.
Last Friday I went to a CVS pharmacy "Minute Clinic" to get the spot checked out. I didnt have any "bullseye" but i thought i better just go in. She dug what she thought was a little piece of the bastard out of my back with some tweezers, and gave me a prescription for a dose of Doxycyclene.
So for everyone who called dibs on my guns, chainsaws and other cool shit, im not dead yet

I've lived with wood ticks for 50 years, couldn't begin to count how many I pulled off myself and critters, but these deer ticks suck big time. I've used the permethrin spray on my clothes in the past but this year I'm going to try the Sawyer soak system like the military uses. Its supposed to be good for several washings.
how long was it on you? was it filled with blood? the males will dig into you but they dont feed... they just hang around and wait fer a chick to crawl by... so you do not get it from males... if it was on ya all night and it was feeding it would be easy to tell.
i assume it was there for 12 + hours, and wasnt full at all.
dads had it severl times- not good.
dont ignore it like he did
fucked him up good
