I'll be traveling to MN in late July or early August from Georgia and want to bring my SBR up. Are SBRs legal in MN? I know suppressors aren't, but am not sure about SBRs.

I feel dumb, I didn't know that sbr's were legal here! I just fell in love with MN all over again! So I can get a krink? Or a 14" ar15? I want one now...only a $200 tax stamp right?

There's a bit more to it, check the NFA subforums in the Armory section...but basically, yeah - go to the ATF's website, request a pair of fingerprint cards to be mailed to you (this is free)...download the PDF form 1 from the ATF's web site...fill it out, print it double-sided, print it out double-sided again (you need two copies)...get two passport photos taken at a Walmart or Walgreens or wherever is convenient...once the fingerprint cards hit your mailbox, see if your county Sheriff or other CLEO will sign off on the form 1s; if so, make sure he signs both forms, and then go and get finger printed. Write out a check for $200 to whomever the ATF tells you to, and mail both copies of the form, fingerprint cards, and photos to the ATF.

There's a lot more details and info in the NFA section of the Armory area, but that's the general gist of it.

And get ready to wait about 7-8 months for the ATF to send you your tax stamp.

Yep. I'm sure you're aware, but the ATF needs to be notified if you transport your SBR across state lines (ATF form 5320.20) .

Thank you for the info! I thought it was a form 4 though? Or is a form 4 only for transfers and form one is if I want to make an SBR or SBS?

Correct - form 1 is manufacture, form 4 is transfer an existing NFA item from one party to another. If you were buying a factory Colt SBR, you'd be using a form 4...if you're buying a stripped receiver from Element and turning it into an SBR, you'll be using a form 1.

I left out engraving the firearm if you're making an SBR...don't forget to do that, too.

I see your bet and I raise you with THIS

Which LEOs/Sheriffs there are not good at signing off on Form 1/4s? Debating if I should get one done before moving back.

I've heard some places in Hennepin are difficult and also heard Ramsey is a no-go, even if you're a LEO. Just what I heard though, I don't have any hard data to back that up.

I didn't have a problem in Wright; I was the County Sheriff's first approval after he was elected in the last election It took him about a week to turn around the paperwork to me, as he'd never done it before and wanted to make sure it was legal and that he wasn't missing something...all of which is fine with me.

Like I said earlier, things will go a lot smoother if you already have a carry permit; that means they've already run a background check, which should help move things along and alleviate any fears.
