need a new .45 lend me your ideas...

Due to circumstances outside of my control, I will need to sell and rid myself of my current Springfield Armory GI 1911 .45 when I get it back from evidence in 30 days. I do not know what direction I want to go. The 1911 was my first pistol I ever bought, but i've since moved to other guns like the XD. I'm looking to the MO hive mind for opinions on a new .45 caliber pistol. I'm not stuck to a 1911 frame, but hte only other .45 I have fired has been an FNP 45 Tactical. Lend me your ideas and I will lend you my ears / eyes.

Look at the S&W M&P 45. Made in the USA and a pretty decent gun for the money. They have version with the thumb safety just like the 45 gov't.

Several good .45 pistols out there. What is your intended purpose for it, that might narrow your choices down some.

The Ruger P95 is very good shooter in my somewhat limited experience. If you can find one, a Para Ordinance 14/45 is one of the better double-stack 1911s as well.

OK, I'll throw this out; Glock 21SF.

If forced to choose non 1911 for EDC. My choice would be G36. Easy to carry, absorbs recoil better than other polymers.

My work EDC is bobtail Officers. Off work carry is Commander and Government models.

If choosing only one carry weapon it would have to be bobtail Commander.

Been XD45c route, sold it because of harsh recoil. Installed Springer trigger group and it was sweet.

Springfield imo needs to rethink XDm.

I agree with above.. M&P or Glock would be some great choices.

Now about that Springer??? Sorry that you have to part with it., but how many peanuts it that worth?

or the regular G21... I've had one for over 15 years, might even be 20 now and that thing has been awesome... I've put so many rounds both Premium and craptastic stuff and everything in between... It eats them all..

There is, not great, but sad. I don't mind telling it though, as I've had my closure. My father shot himself on Tuesday morning and I found him shortly after. He was in a deep and losing battle with lung cancer, and decided he wasn't going to let the cancer beat him to the punch. He kept my pistol for home defense as he was on a fixed income and had to sell his firearms to stay affloat. I'm not mad at my father, but more releaved that he is out of his pain. I know everybody has thier own opinions on suicide, but I know he was sound in his decision. He was a soldier and a fighter, and for him to call uncle, I know he was in more pain than any of us could comprehend. I am working on an online memorial, as I want to share him with you guys, that will come soon. We had his funeral on Friday with military honors and pipes.

Sorry to hear man .

I have an M&P full size in .45 I'm on the fence about getting rid of. I just like 1911's better and shoot those more.

very sorry to hear that my friend.

I bought a glock 21 last summer and love it, I shoot the crap out of it, don't care if it gets banged up, only clean it occasioanlly and it still runs. I held out for years not buying a glock, but now I am a believer.

Sorry for your father that the pain was to the point that it was to much. I hope that it never comes to that point in my life that I would have to contemplate such a decision.

I recently bought an Rock Island (aka RIA) in .45 and the compact model. Love this little cheap ass gun. Have ran about 500 rounds through it and love its reliable feeding and ejection. Only draw back is the funky take down. No bushing, and you have to use a pin to lock the guide rod/spring.

I shot my friend's fnp 45 tactical and I liked it alot. I think I am going to head to UD range next week and rent some of the recomendations here. I hear alot of good things about the M&Pand the Gen3 glocks, so I'm gonna have to give them a try a swell.

Another vote for the S&W M&P45 in the mid size, without the optional grip safety. I just bought one and I really like it. Unless you have a very large hand, the Glock is like holding a brick (including the so called SG model). The S&W has interchangable grip inserts to tailor the size to your hand and is a really nice weapon.

I picked up my 1911 from St. Charles City Evidence Dept. today. That was one of the hardest things I have had to do in a long time. The gun is currently in a BIO bag / back and wraped in brown paper. I am going to have to clean it tonight, as I've been told there is a lot of blood on it. The gun was a GI Springfield 1911 A1, parkerized. Do you guys think I will have any problems with corrosion? It's been sitting for 30 days in the evidence dept.

Brother, let a friend take care of cleaning it and selling it.

Good family friend (taught me to shoot and hunt) took care of my dad's shotgun.
If I were local I'd take care of it for you. Maybe someone here can step up to the plate.

Too much for you handle.

Also if you ever want to talk give me a holler. Been through that pain.

I can't thank you all enough for all the support you've given me is this. I opened it up tonight. It was one more thing I had to do to give me more closure on this. I'll admit it, it was rough, but my father brought me up to be the softest hardass possible.

I gave the parts a good long bath in boiling water with dawn, followed by a good rise with windex and then distlled water. I then sat it in the oven on low for a few minutes after blasting it with compressed air until dry. I then soiled it in Breakfree CLP followed by a good long rest in a high absorbency (sp?) towel. It's clean an ready for me to dump somewhere. I thought long and hard, and though I am really going to miss that gun, as it was my first .45 I'm gonna get rid of it. I was hoping to give it to my son someday.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Can't imagine what you must be going through.

My input on the .45 (fwiw) I have a G21, HK USP and a PARA. I love them all, but for accuracy and dependability I think I'd go with the G21 (the PARA of course if you just want to carry more bullets in the gun).

I generally believe that .45acp is reserved for 1911s, and that everything else is better in 9mm.

If I was to ever buy a non-1911 .45acp, I think it'd be a CZ 97.

Im lost for words in responce to what your going through. I can't even imagine cleaning a firearm a loved one used to take their life. I took care of my mom at home as she died from cancer...after watching her and taking care of her, I can vaguely imagine the place your father was st and can understand his choice. Cancer is a horrible, horrible thing. I don't blame him.

In regards to your .45, think long and hard about selling it. Make sure your heart is telling you to do it and that your emotions of loss, hurt and frustration aren't making that decision. Once you sell that pistol, its gone forever and that will be history lost. I'm not saying your wrong in selling it, I don't blame you a bit. It's just that I've regretted selling every gun I've ever sold. I would hate for you to wake up 60-90 days from now feeling even more loss with that 'first' .45 gone.

Stay strong...you have support here.

It's also why I didn't offer to buy it. I shoot at ranges out your way that you might shoot at as well. I'm much happier being in the group of folks that are doing what we can to help you through this and not the guy with the Springfield that used to be yours.

We lost my mom and my wife's mom a few years back. Mine from congestive heart failure brought on by years of poor diabetes care and hers due to a cockup by a doctor with her psoriasis treatments. We've also lost friends to cancer and we have seen the kind of pain your father was in. When the pain you are suffering fades a bit, you'll remember the good times much more clearly than you probably do now. God bless and remember to lean on us and others more than you feel you want to. Death is something everyone deals with one way or another, thanks for letting us help you in your time of need.

Lost my biological father a little over 23 years ago to suicide. Link And it still hurts thinking about him at times, but it hurts more on how he went and not knowing why he did it. I have lost 2 people in my life to violent acts. As others have stated, if you ever want to talk about it or anything else, just PM me.

Josh,

I watched my father whither away to nothing from cancer. He went through chemo and radiation treatment and may have gained a few extra miserable months of life. When he finally went he weighed 85lbs. He looked like a bag of bones. My dad was 6'3". The images will never escape me. If my fate is similar I will drive off into the sunset while I can still make my own decisions and implement them. The desire to live is so strong, knowing when to check out and doing it takes some real guts. Anybody can lay there and take the pain, so many people do everyday.

In most situations suicide perplexes me. People check out when they have so much more time to live. I always say, tomorrow is a new day and can be the first day of your new life.... But when the body is gone and you know you at the end of the path, why put yourself and others through all the bullshit.

I'm sorry you lost your dad.....

I am a big fan of the 1911, but recently I have been growing fond of my USP45. The controls are very similar to a 1911 in Variant 1 and it can be changed to many other modes of operation fairly cheaply. They are a bit brick-like in the hand but a finer combat pistol will be hard to find. Otherwise just get another 1911. :)

I'm sorry for your loss. I can only imagine what you're going through. Cleaning the pistol was probably the hardest thing you've ever had to do but I'm sure it helped you in the long run.

I have an XD 45 compact and I really liked it until I started shooting the M&P's. I have some larger hands so the M&P works better for me. I might be looking to get rid of the XD so if you're looking for something like that, let me know.

Sorry for your loss and what you have had to endure.

Thanks again for all the support guys. I think I have decided on what I want to get. Now I just need to find one or find a dealer who will buy one off of gunbroker. I've decided to stay on the 1911. I'm gonna try and find a Springfield 1911 Range Officer. I'll probably still pick up a poly framed .45 as well, but I've gotta have my 1911 before that.

Anyone know of an FFL in the St. Louis area that would accept a transfer of a pistol purchased from gunbroker?

Funny you post that. I went to a local shop today to eyeball the Springfield RO, and to possibly look at other options. I held a FNH .45 and then henld an M&P. I was amazed at how well the M&P fits and is as easy to aim as my 1911 was. I may end up getting the RO and trading in my xd9 for a m&p 9mm.
