Local gunsmith/Cost to chamber & thread a barrel blank...
Just wondering if anyone knows of any local good/affordable gunsmiths that can chamber & thread a barrel blank, and how much it would cost? Was thinking about chambering a .30 cal/ .308 barrel in 7.62x54R for my M91/30 and was wanting to get an idea of how much it might cost. Either that or I guess someone at least with a lathe since it would be local and after some research I assume it'd be possible for a non-demanding project such as this in terms of accuracy. I'm more interested in using .308 projectiles than I am the accuracy benefit from getting a barrel machined. Yea yea, I know it's a cheap rifle and pointless, but my question still stands. Thanks.
I can't really help you on a local source, but for a cost I'd say about $150 minimum not counting the cost of the barrel blank. The blank would need to be profiled and made to attach to the action, then chambered. If you find someone with just a lathe large enough to do a barrel figure on about $80 for the chamber reamer, then whatever he wants for profiling it. It's a bit of work to do correctly making sure to cut the chamber and OD concentric to the bore.
I honestly wouldn't let Joe Blow with a lathe and no barrel experience do it, there's a good chance he'll screw it up or break the reamer and your out the cost of the barrel and reamer.
