Heading to Wilmington for the weekend.

Hello all,

I've got some work to do in Wilmington this coming Friday afternoon. So I asked the wife if she wanted to make a weekend out of it and she said yes. We'll be staying near the UNC campus.

So, while I've scheduled this weekend away with my wife, I have no idea what to do. I really want to go see the North Carolina but the wife doesn't and I can do that anytime I'm down there; so that's out.

Any nice localish places to eat Friday night? Maybe some shopping and walking around the downtown/historic district (where is that anyway?) on Saturday, or I've even considered taking a leisurely drive north to about Onslow county. Maybe a B&B there.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Downtown can be nice. But get in and get out. The later you stay into the night the more of a shit hole it becomes. What kind of food are you looking for? Steak - Port City Chop House, view on the water - The George, jazz bar atmosphere for drinks and upscale bar food - Cameo 1900.

enjoyed the NC Train Museum with the kids and wife as well as the USS NC, took the ferry ride and checked a few lighthouses while there too...

Btw, check out the Cotton Exchange downtown. If you decide to go walk and look at some of the historic homes, make sure you're packing. It goes from nice homes to scumbag quickly. Stay away from Red Cross. Don't go any farther north than really 5th street, especially if you're going to be walking around Princess or Chesnutt St.

Downtown isn't Mogadishu, but north of 5th street is. Water St. and Front St. are as safe as anywhere. Most of "Downtown" is from Ann St. north to CFCC, and from the river east to 2nd St. There are a ton of cool shops and restaurants down there. If y'all are into doing outside stuff, there's always Wrightsville Beach and Airlie Gardens. There are a bunch of good restaurants at wb as well.

USed to be a place in the Cotton Exchange called Paddy's Hollow...nice little pub. The Riverboat Landing is a nice place to eat. Both of these places are down on the waterfront.

Never said it was. I'd agree that Water and Front St are a good place to take a stroll and enjoy being downtown. With that said, I've never been a big fan of downtown. I'd prefer being over off Wrightsville Beach or Airlie Gardens as you suggested.

Paddy's is still there. My office (in CFCC) is less than 100 yards from it.

Drive to Carolina Beach boardwalk and eat homemade donuts and drink a cold glass of milk at Britt's Donuts. Visit Fort Fisher. Take ferry to Southport and eat shrimp and drink beer outside on the patio and right on the water at The Provision Company. Take the back roads back to Wilmington.
