Jury duty in SC? *update*
I just got a letter in the mail stating that I have to report for jury duty in a few weeks.
I know, I know, it's my civic duty blah blah blah. That doesn't mean I have to like it.
Has anyone here done jury duty, especially in Beaufort County? What should I expect?
They gave me some info, but a lot of it is pretty vague. It looks like I might have to do it for the entire f***ing week!?
I'm pretty p****d at the thought of missing out on a week's pay. It's not like I don't have a mortgage, tuition, and textbooks to pay for this month.
F**K
kids? sole care-taker? sole bread winner for 'family'?

Single with no kids.
The paperwork they sent me said that if I was in school, I could serve jury duty at a later date, but the semester ends right before I'm supposed to report for duty.
not really helpful but i got picked for jury duty once. in berkerly county. they had a number on the paperwork to call the day before to confirm if you even have to come. i called and i didnt have to go.

Mine has a number to call 3 days before I'm supposed to go. Were you potentially on the hook for just the one day?

yes, just one day.
I've been called 3 or 4 times over the years. Only once did I get picked to sit in the jury panel. Then it took three days for the trial. It was a weapons related crime so it was kinda interesting. Of course I was getting paid my normal 40 hours so I couldn't complain too much.
For the times that I didn't get picked basically you just show up Monday morning and do the roll call thing, after they pick the pool of jurers and alternates everyone else is dismissed (usually by 10:30am) and all you have to do is call and listen to a recording that tells you if you need to report the next day or to call back and listen to the recoding again tomorrow.
Well, that went as well as it possibly could have. They only had one case scheduled - the judge said that was incredibly rare. They qualified all the jurors, and picked a jury for the case tomorrow.
I wasn't picked, but I did qualify so I'm off the hook for 3 years.

Just be glad you didn't get called for grand jury duty. In lancaster county, you are on the grand jury for a whole year. My neighbor has to driver down to lancaster once a month.
I was on a Federal GJ for a year. Had to drive from Spartanburg to Columbia every 2nd Tuesday of the month. I didn't mind it a bit. If nothing else, it will really open your eyes as to how people will blindly go along with whatever the indictment reads, and actually refuse to think for themselves.
It was kinda interesting to see how things go in court, especially since I took criminal justice last semester. However, it was bad enough missing a day of work. Missing two or more would've really hurt. Jury duty here pays in a day about half of what I make in an hour.
