Hello from Indiana! WE are heading over to the Outer Banks, NC for vacation. I wanna bring a BOB along and thought about packing an AR pistol. Haven't searched the Carolinas forum long enough to find any info other than S. Carolina laws.
Go or no go on AR pistols in NC? Thanks, BlueNuts
I believe AR pistols are good to go but I would call the LEO office in the area just to confirm.
I'd just bring a full rifle :)
I can't imagine why they would be a no-go. I dont think it counts as a pistol from a ccw perspective, just an atf perspective. Treat it like a rifle when transporting and you should be good to go. But wait for someone else to chime in, I am no legal expert.
In the eyes of the law its a pistol, just like a Lorcin 25acp.
The DA may call it a High capacity assault pistol, but it's still just a pistol.
Thanks for the replies fellas! If ya see the BFL on a big black Chevy on the road to the OBX, it's me!

That's interesting. I tried looking for it, but after 15 minutes I gave up. NC's definition of handgun is far more lenient than SC's. In SC, the maximum length of the firearm must be 12" or less on its longest dimension. NC does not have any such provisions it seems...so unless there is anything, you can actually carry your AR pistol concealed if you want to.
Again, I urge you to make sure of this before you keep your AR pistol in the passenger compartment of the car. Can anyone link to all laws that define handgun?
The only thing I found in 15 minutes was this which may be the difinition only as it applies to a minor. I didn't see a definition as it applies to carrying concealed which is what I was looking for:
14‑269.7. Prohibitions on handguns for minors.
(c) The following definitions apply in this section:
(1) Handgun. – A firearm that has a short stock and is designed to be fired by the use of a single hand, or any combination of parts from which such a firearm can be assembled.
Funny. I carried an AR pistol with a Beta mag under a trenchcoat a few times, just for shits and giggles. Even went over to my then next door neighbor's house to show him my setup. He's a PD Sgt. Wanted to show him what was legal. The look on his face was priceless.

It is a pistol as long as it doesn't have a stock on it then it's considered an SBR if I'm not mistaken.
Do you have a Conceal Carry permit?
If so and you happen to get pulled just hand the Officer your DL and CCW permit and wait for further instructions.

Yes i have my CCW. After responses here and reading a few articles it appears that NC holds to the same BATF definition as IN. God bless america!
