Alaska brown bear hunting.. Does it really cost 13k to hunt a bear?
Well Silly me I go and buy my 338 LM because I wanted to go brown bear hunting someday and I come to find out the trips as far as I can see cost a shit load of cash. I'm from ILLINOIS and have planned to get extensive training before such a trip. Is there a way a guy can just hunt bear somewhere in AK that doesn't require a plane or a guide?

I believe that all brown/kodiakl/grizzly hunting requires a guide in AK for non resident hunters

Black bears are the only unguided bear hunts.
Yep. you are correct on the price. It varies, but in that general area.

Yup, clear as day in the regs Sorry Dude. These are just the prices for the license, not counting anything else. They could change as the current regs are only good till july 1.
-Non-Resident Big Game Hunting License $85
-Brown/Grizzly Locking Tag $500 (if you do not get a bear, you can get any less expensive critter with your bear locking tag, provided you have a harvest ticket for that species)
-Harvest Ticket (free)
-Yellow Form (it shows what locking tags, etc are issued)
that really sucks! I'm 31 and hell I didn't even have enough cash to buy my 8k rifle really but I went for it. I guess I'll just go black bear hunting in WI. :( Maybe another state has griz and I can hunt them there. we will see. thanks all!
you spent 8K on a rifle to hunt AK? Holy Christ

You'd be surprised on some of the rigs I've had come through the shop. Lucky guides are usually gifted the guns by European guys after the hunt since flying home would be a pain in the butt. One of my regulars (a guide) was given a blazer r5 with high end Swarovski scope by a German customer. The jerk lol.
A lot of folks see hunting up here as a once in a lifetime thing and go all out.

Just how much did you think the hunt would cost you?
338LM might be a little overkill for a brown bear. Could have bought a much less expensive caliber/gun and put some of the $ towards the cost of the trip.

I agree. That and I wouldn't want to haul around a 338LM. I don't know of any that aren't heavy as all get out...
That and I think OP is light on the $13K.

Hell, 30-06 would do it just fine, along with anything bigger. Personally, I'd go .375 ruger or H&H. Huge bullet with light recoil compared to .338 win mag. *shrug*
Figure sportsmans is the only place that carries lapua in fairbanks, and they are usually sold out.
No offense but I feel like you might have spent about 7k too much on a rifle. Would've gone a long way towards 13k. Just sayin...
You spent $8000 on a rifle to use on one hunt but balk at paying for the hunt?
All you need to get around the Guide is a resident who is 19 yoa or older within 2nd degree of kindred to be within 100 yards of you while you hunt, I have a really ugly sister we can't get married off.

Are you single ?
It's by no means my preferred gun but I've seen 2 brown be.ars taken with a .270
Nice troll rogue...

I've seen one as well.
Good riddance take it elsewhere if you don't like the fees. True alaskans should reap the benefits of the wildlife up there and the fees collected by all of the outside hunters and fisherman help sustain the quality of the wildlife. That is the reason Alaska still has trophy fish and animals. I miss having my residency there but when I come home I don't have a problem paying for the privelege of great hunting and fishing. Only other thing that the state needs to do is heavily regulate the longline and commercial industry to bring back the great runs of salmon and halibut.
He musta told someone he needs that for the Alaska Brown Bear.
I would pay that for a Rifle.
The shells for that if over $100 a box of 20..
I'll just keep my 300WM..
