L1A1 and FAL seized in London
The MET have arrested a 29 year old man and a 23 year old woman in Edmonton after the seizure of a FAL and an L1A1.
I wonder if they're actually capable of firing live rounds or will turn out to be deacts?

Link?
The reason I'm questioning whether they're deacts or not, is that they both appear to be in identical cardboard boxes that have cutouts so that you can see the contents.

What you mean like evidence boxes ?

Looks like the sort of thing we saw Libyans unpacking in large numbers a few months ago.
I want one if I can fire it from 460 metres away!
Look new to me, not the usual deact tat you see at the proof house etc

Was just thinking that myself, the L1 also has a top cover with a cut out for a top charger ala Canuck style, also the marks on the FAL's safety looks like it's been used on full chat quite a bit

Interesting,
If Anaxes is right and these are similar to the ones we all saw being liberated in Libya a few months ago (and let's face it, there were a lot of them), it could lead you to the conclusion that tere may be many more "on the streets"
Stupid phrase

They're not the most compact of firearms to get ( smuggle) into Blighty though ?
I would have thought the risk of 10 yrs sharing with Mr Big would put that nonsense
out of most normal peoples heads

Not all of us know what an evidence box looks like.

People say the same thing about drug smuggling but it doesn't stop drugs coming into the country.
If you can flood the streets with drugs, you can flood them with guns.
There's a contact us with feedback option on the Met site. I coudn't resist it
I merely pointed out that the article suggested that the rifles could be fired by remote control, and would they care to elaborate?

Yes, early days and we certainly know the facts, but it wouldn't be too hard to get them into the country via an overland or sea route.
Especially as they can be broken down.
I'm betting on them being the real deal

Little wonder that case evidence goes missing. It must fall out through the bloody great big hole in the box !!

Looks like we're going to need a bigger gun..............

....or I could just stay at 465m and be safe.

..."Detective Chief Inspector Steve Wagstaff of the Central Task Force said: ".......The Self Loading Rifle (SLR) is an extremely devastating assault rifle and the
seizure of two live weapons has meant that these weapons have now been taken off the streets of London."
DCI Wagstaff appears to have clarified the question.
Interesting case. I wonder what their plans for these rifles were, as no doubt do the Met.

Well as the arrests appear to be in connection with Operation Trident (black on black) its fair to say they weren't upstanding citizens and are probably involved in a drug war.

good result in that case
I've had an acknowldgement to my email from the Met. Stay tuned

I'm sure there's a reason for such an oddly specific range. I'm sure the reason isn't a good one.
Trident involvement suggests gang-related possession. I'm hoping it was obtained as an "opportunistic" measure, not because someone is deliberately planning engagements out to 600m. If they are, the Met better rethink its "stand quietly in a line with a tin stick and bit of acrylic" approach during the next riot season.

More likely the original comment was an arbitrary '500yards', ie 457m, so @460m
Trident also take on other firearms stuff as they are already geared up for it, not just gangs..
Wanting such a weapon is a bit ominous though, as already mentioned, not the easiest of guns to conceal...

Well I was trying to shy away from "it was in Edmonton so it was probably gang related" because that just sounds racist

I assume that when you go along to buy illegal guns, you dont turn down what's on offer.
Besides if they're going to go busting' into a rivals den in the dark of the night, I don't think they'll bee worrying too much about concealment.
Personally if I was plod, I'd be looking for a sneaky Uzbekistani that goes by the name of Boris

When the Met reply to my email, i'll pass that bit of intelligence on

Somebody probably found the deact certificates

While I'm sure these incidents are fairly rare, and not wanting to detract from the success of stopping these two guns getting into the wrong hands it does beg the question, how many are still out there?

Don't worry.
If any of us get caught up in an incident involving people carrying assault rifles intent on doing us harm, the law permits us to defend ourselves using a stiff upper lip and a cucumber sandwich.

Just thinking that'd be a fairly suitable gun for a "Mumbai Style Attack"...

Well to start with, there's approx 35,000-40,000 Brocock's unaccounted for
How much of the IRA's haul was actually decommissioned ? 10% / 50 % ?
Who's to know ?

Funny how we are all thinking the same thing.
Good job the UK Population is disarmed and incapable of defending themselves in the face of such an attack. Far better to be a victim than be trusted with the ability to defend oneself.

So it's not just me that thought it then...
At least in London around the Olympics there might be some armed police (or even members of the army) who could respond; the same can't be said for the same throughout the rest of the country.
Look what Derrick "d-bag" Bird was able to do.
...and another one!
9mm SMG & silencer
Old news.... That was middle of last year.....

i suspect that much of this is an arms race between gangs, which if they are just going to slot oneanother is a fairly contained situation.........in theory at least.
Even so, it is somewhat un-nerving that firepower like this is out there and in thre hands of people who have little or no regard for the law, or the safety of others, or worse still with outright hostile intent against what is a largely unarmed populace.
The whole "Mumbai" scenario seems to be a serious consideration, especially given the Olympics and the impending media spotlight that will be on the UK.
Anybody considering some sort of attack will probably be planning to strike somewhere other than the Olympic stadium. Why attack somewhere crawling with security, police, army etc when you could pick some innocuous suburban town.
That would be piss easy with no police presence and put the fear of God (or allah) into the whole country.
