I got a call from a local police officer who wants to build an AR pistol , he's in NJ
What are the NJ restrictions on AR Pistols?
Anyone know ?

Less than 50 oz. and no fore grip.
Look back a couple months. There was an extensive discussion in this forum.
I'm on iPhone, so don't want to dig it up for you.

Carbon 15 upper and lower, 7.5" non-threaded barrel, no handguards, no standard AR buffer are the critical items.
Must keep unloaded weight under 50oz as manufactured.

Professional Ordinance and Bushmaster like this (no longer available new since Bushy sold and moved) is the order of the day
Good luck!

Yeah I found this in the archives

In NJ a pistol that accepts a detachable magazine can legally only have one of the following features:

(1) An ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip;
(2) A threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor,
forward handgrip, or silencer;
(3) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles the barrel and
that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the non-trigger hand without being
burned;
(4) Manufactured weight of 50 ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded; and/or
(5) A semi-automatic version of an automatic firearm;

So in order for an AR pistol to be legal it must have no handguards, no barrel threads, and weight less than 50 ounces when unloaded.

Look at bushmasters 97 pistol, should mimic that. I myself have been wanting to build one to see if it can be done with forged reicevers.

You would have to trim a whole lot of weight.
Swiss-cheesing the aluminum lower is just the start
Then get rid of the standard buffer, buffer tube and recoil spring for something a lot lighter
Then make the upper and barrel assembly lighter, if you can
Are you down to 50oz yet??

Im not so sure BM has a 55oz forged pistol that is what sparked my interest in seeing if it can be done. Next lower i buy is going on a permit so i can actually see if i can do it

Doesn't look like they wanted to make a Gulag (NY/NJ) Compliant model this time!

Looks like a standard buffer system
That would account for the 6oz overage
(my carbon 15 models use a lighter, shortened bolt carrier and a tiny buffer, with a long skinny spring in a c-15 tube on a c-15 center rod in the tube)

You'd still need to swap the flash hider for a brake and permanently attach it (no QD visible on this model) [future problem removing gas block/front sight]

Good luck and please keep us in the loop on your progress (AR pistols are funnnnnnnn!!!!)

Could probably hog out some of the magwell wall as well..not enough to get a 5oz reduction though.....However, maybe on one of those plum crazy lowers you could run a regular spring and buffer

This is legal and much better looking than the Bushy. That buffer spring sticking out looks so stupid. Only problem is finding one. They are no longer being made.
