Punching out early tomorrow for Guadalupe Mountain National Park - 8,749 ft, the highest point in Texas.
I've been there before (almost froze to death during a freak ice storm on Columbus Day weekend years ago), but, this time, I'm taking my 16 and 13 year old boys for a pilgrimage. Might take in the 4x4 road to Williams ranch and/or Carlsbad Caverns.
Hiked it in 9th grade, very cool and very pretty country out there
Almost died when the trail gave way beneath me and a teacher
caught my collar and kept me from quite a nasty tumble

The wife and I were out there Memorial weekend last year. Carlsbad Caverns was cool, but be prepared it is run and staffed by uber libs. I suppose most National Parks are, but it was especially bad there. Get something to eat before you go, the little cafe place inside was awful.

Tagging for a response from someone who does.
If I recall right, the trailhead is about 5200 or 5300 feet elevation and you're hiking up to 8700. It entirely depends on your hiking speed but I remember taking about 4 1/2 hours up and I'm no speed demon. Coming down goes a lot faster. It's a fun day hike with plenty of time left over for taking breaks for pics. Pack plenty of water and a few snacks. I love hiking in the Guadalupes.
I'm at 430 feet... I'd get nose bleeds.

it takes me longer going downhill than hiking up
