An off-duty NYPD officer died Thursday after shooting himself in the head in his Bronx home, police sources said.

The cop, whose name was not released, was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center after a 911 call at 9:45 p.m., police and fire officials said.

Neighbors said the officer had lived on the top floor at the Holland Ave. address in Van Nest for a few months.

"He was a good neighbor — quiet,” said Ziggy Poindexter, 79.

"He was always smiling and happy,” said Nathan Vellon 20, whose family owns the home the cop was living in. "He seemed like a nice guy.”

Five NYPD police officers have committed suicide with guns in 2012.

I have two friends who are NYPD cops and they are both miserable because of how the brass treats them (all cops, not one them specifically). One was miserable from the start but the other had a great attitude and really held on to the love for the job for the first couple of years, then it just wore away at him. Google Adrian Schoolcraft if you want to know more details about what goes on in that hellhole.

Kick the dog down the line of command syndrome. It's the norm in many departments and especially in large metro departments.

RIP, my old friend Bobby Smath, who ate his gun on duty in 1994.
