I'm taking my first outside the academy handgun training course this weekend and I was wondering if there was anything that I should do to prepare? The obvious things like function checks, and having my ammo aside.

Make sure you've got all you gear, then check and double-check it. There's not much else you can do in 4 days. Just show up with all your stuff and an open mind (and a clean, lubed weapon).

Take more ammo than you are told to.
Do not be "that guy" that tries to "guest instruct" the class as a student.
Bring snacks, water, gatorade, and toilet paper.
Bring your own first aid kit.
WEAR YOUR BODY ARMOR!
Two sets of eye and ear pro.
Pre load most of your mags. Leave 1 or 2 empty for dry drills.
Take more than 3 magazines.
Document the training for court purposes. Start a training log
Make extra copies of your certificate.
If you use your duty weapon as a CCW take both sets of gear to train with.
Shoot some duty loads if possible.
and finally, keep taking more courses after this one.
You will be labeled a training junkie or a certificate hunter by those who don't understand.

I just wanted to come back in here and thank you two for the suggestions. They really did help. So again thank you both.
