Sig Sauer Academy Skill Builder Rifle Course
Took this class last week and was very glad I did. It is a 1 day 8 hour course. You can use your AR or AK platform in any caliber configuration. The cost of the course is $150 which includes the use of any of their Sig Sauer rifles, mags, belts, hearing protection etc... if needed. The course was instructed by Scott Reidy who I've had before and he is excellent. The day started with quick intros, safety protocals and then we got into the weapons check. Scott made sure all weapons were well lubed, slings were correctly attached and red dots were marked on the rail in case they fell off. The class began at 8:30 and we were on the range by 9:30 am. From there we zeroed our red dot sights and ran some POA and POI drills to get a good understanding of what ranges and where to hold the red dot on target. The rest of the morning was spent learning how to clear different malfunctions, reloads and the standing, kneeling and prone shooting positions. Just before lunch we got to shoot steel at 100 and 200 yards which was great because not many people get to shoot their AR15s at 200 yards. We broke for lunch for 1 hour and came back at 1:15pm. The remainder of the day was filled with drills that lead to mini competitions. We completed a 50 yard modified Navy Seal qualifier, the El Presidente and the zig zag. The zig zap was interesting: you had to grab your unloaded gun, go prone at 100 yards, load weapon, turn on red dot and shoot 3 shots on steel. When you get your 3 hits on steel you run to the 75 yard barricade on the far right side of the course. You put 3 shots on steel kneeling. After your hits you run to the far left side barricade and to put 3 hits on steel kneeling again at the 50 yard mark. After you made your 3 hits you run to the far right side 25 yard barricade and put three hits on paper standing. All 3 shots must be within the 8 inch circle. You are timed on this event. There were so many drills I may have missed some.
PROS: Good cost for 7 hour professional instruction, over 300 rounds fired, great instructor, many valuable drills, great class for intermediate to advanced levels.
CONS: 11 people took a long time for the last drill, would have been nice to use up extra ammo on steel with some mag dumps at the end, you have to pick up the brass out of sand at the end of the course.
