Appleseed rifle choice
I have a Marlin Mod 60 that is very old but even more accurate. The bad thing it is tube fed. I will keep the mod 60 as my squirrel rifle, but i need a mag fed 22 for appleseed.
What should i get for appleseed and general plinking: 10/22 or a 22 conv kit for my AR. Budget $250.
This was sent to me by a shoot boss when I asked him about bringing my M60:

Straight from the Instructor's Manual:
Shooters with tube fed rifles when they hear the command
“Shooters! Your Preparation Period Has Ended!” will kneel, place the chamber flag
in, load the appropriate number of rounds in the magazine and lock the tube
plunger in place. **IN THAT ORDER**
While the tube fed rifles are being loaded the Line Boss can use the time to briefly
explain again if necessary the COF. Especially, when the AQT is still new to everyone.
Make sure the shooters with tube fed rifles understand that if the upcoming COF involves
a magazine change they are to simulate it by placing two shots in the first target for that
stage, eject a round and then continue the COF.

I am bringing my 60 to an Appleseed shoot sometime this year.
For the faster-paced second day, when there is not much time to reload mags between courses, I have constructed some tubular speed-loaders - some for 11 rounds and some for 10 rounds. I can reload all between the AQT's in about 90 seconds or so. Can't wait to see the look on the faces of the 10/22 owners when I've reloaded faster than them!
Plus, the speed-loaders look like arrows. Bet I'll look funny with a quiver full of arrows at the shoot.

Tube fed rifles can be used in an Appleseed, you just lose a little time when we get to timed fire. If you want a new mag fed semi auto rifle for under $250 go for the Marlin 795. Marlin is offering a $30 mail in rebate that brings the price right at $100. Buy at least three mags and QD 1 1/4" sling and Tech sights or a scope and your all set. I have one of these set up as a loaner and it works great.
If you don't have a conversion kit I would get one. You could always run the heavier 60gr aquila's and you should have decent enough accuracy for an appleseed with a fast twist rifle.
You have to be able to put shots within an inch, inch and a quarter square at 25 yards to shoot rifleman so if your rifle ammo combo will do that you are set.
Since you already have the tube fed gun I dunno if a marlin would be much different it just has a clip. The conversion allows you to use your ar more which is really nice since I imagine it is already set up with iron sights etc. and it would be a fun but not laser accurate plinker with regular bulk .22 assuming your ar is 1/7. My 1/12 with ciener though will shoot with or better than my spikes 1/16. There is an advantage to having more trigger time on the ar platform if it is your go to gun.

That is why i want a conv kit. I have a lot of money in my AR, so i would like to use it more often. I am just concerned with the typical conv kit issues like ftf and fte. My AR is 1:9.
I can easeily shoot the mod 60 that accurate, i am just worried about the second day timed reloads. I found a tube fed spead loader, this may work:

I have been reading up on the arrow speed loaders. I may have a few arrows around here. I think the mod 60 is winning.
I have shot an appleseed with a bolt action single shot and missed getting all rounds on target by one or two. So you could do it with a tube fed. I didn't score very well because i was rushing but totally doable.
with a 1/9 and a conversion and the right ammo I would try the AR. unless you don't want to buy a conversion. which you really should have.
break in the new conversion kit prior to going to the Appleseed (no need to have issues while trying to learn)
Sight the rifle in with the conversion kit prior to going to the Appleseed (some folks report the same point of impact with .22 rimfire and .223 ammo at 25 meters but none of mine have the same point of impact, some are a straight drop - 22 rimfire hits lower, some are low and off to the right or left, but none are the same.)
Find the brand/type of .22 ammo your conversion kit/rifle like prior to the Appleseed (part of the break in process).
One of mine really likes Rem. Golden Bullets. One likes the Federal bulkpack stuff.
One of our conversion kits (the Ceiner) worked great with the factory magazine but had failure to fire issues with the black dog magazines. Finally figured out the bolt was dragging on the right side lip of the black dog magazine and failing to go fully closed. Removed a small amount of that lip with my pocket knife (not cutting, but scraping) and no more issues - had to do it on a couple other black dog mags, too.
Good luck, have fun.

I've got this exact setup(with a GI sling of course)and it works! If you are going to use the .22lr,trust me,buy the Tech-Sights!If you can't adjust your sights with positive clicks(pretty much all .22 rifle stock leaf/notch sights)you will just be that much more behind the power curve accuracy wise.
Update - and it is in response to issues brought up in the original post.
I took my tube-fed Marlin 60 to an Appleseed two weeks ago.
There were two other Marlin 60's on the line, but they had no speed loaders.
First AQT Saturday - shot a 216. Using tech sights, Remington Bulk ammo, no sling, no .30-caliber rule.
The tube was never a hindrance on speed, thanks to the speed-loaders.
Several of the instructors inspected my speed-loaders and made positive comments.
The really fun part was the 4-minute AQT's.
I finished those first each time... and all of the other shooters were using box-mag fed rifles.
The looks on their faces (and the instructors) when I would pop my rifle up with a speed loader, and 10 more rounds would drop in - in about the same time as changing a mag -
The look on my face -

Good deal. I am glad it worked out for you.
