OST= Old School TAG, nowadays we have a subscribe button.

BOT- I've seen it for sale on the local guntrader site for a buck a round, I can't imagine paying that, had a bunch of that stuff in the nineties, it wasn't great and smelled like cat piss when fired.

Like others have mentioned, it wasn't designed to be AP ammo, they used a mild steel core because it was cheaper than lead, or so I was told.

Thanks for the info. Only stuff I can find for sale is .80 - $1.20/rd. Wasn't sure if this was gouging or just what it's going for. I know "normal" x39 is .40 ish/rd right now.

It is worth what someone will pay for it. A lot of people have figured out steel core is not a big deal, but

In today's climate, you can probably get a buck a round for it, in spite of it being corrosive primed and likely 50 years old. What is the head stamp?

People used to shit on Chinese ammunition but I never had any problems with it.

It is indeed old. 131/77 headstamp.

Newer than most of the Chinese 7.62x39mm steel core that came in. The vast majority was 60s to early 70s dated.

How did you acquire it? Trade, Gun show, etc? I’m just curious.

I have sold a bunch in the .60-.70 cent a round neighborhood. Much more than that and it lingers for sale

Several countries make/made AP and API in 7.62x39mm. I've never seen any of the AP loads in the US in other than collector quantities. The performance of the API rounds is disappointing. I tested some against mild steel and they barely penetrated 3/8". The Russians stopped making them in the 1950s/early 1960s, but China and the WP countries and a few others continued to do so.

The 7.62x39mm just doesn't have enough ass to be a great AP round.

For a collector a full yellow box of ChiCom would be worth a dollar or less a round. For shooting all I ever heard was complaints on how filthy sooty it was. As cheap as I can be I never bought any China made ammo even at its cheapest and most available time.

CORROSIVE...

Limits the Value to many shooters as SKS & AK's are no longer throw away trashcan guns...

I never experienced Chinese ammunition being more dirty than any other.

Definitely 5 cpr below market value. I don't know much about the soft points though. I would buy it

SP chinese always cost more, even back when it was imported.  I have never tested any of it, but it has to work a lot better than any of the HP ammo that won’t open up on anything.

Plus it was specifically made to export to the US, vs being some surplus stuff from the 60’s or 70’s.

I would buy it all at .30 a round, even before the current ammo crunch.

Added- my dad actually carried a MAK-90 as a patrol rifle for a while, and used that exact ammo for his duty rounds.  He never shot anyone with it, but he put down a ton of injured animals all the time as he was a game warden, and may have used it there instead of some of the other choices he had .  I will ask...

I still have some of that crap- it chrono'd at about 2300fps, which is about par.
IMO it got its rep back when it was imported because people thought the steel core made it special and it became an internet legend. Sellers are always trying to get stupid $$ for it but I've seen it in gunshops junk boxes for a low as .18/rd about 3 years ago- probably higher now...
