Dang it, just like reading a good book, you cannot put down, then finding the last two chapters are missing.................uhh!
Hope you get it together and final pics up soon, looks really, really GREAT so far! |

Shouldn't this be made a sticky? The question seems to pop up often enough.
Superbly done! Am I the only one that thinks the rear sight is just awesome?
The build looks great. I ordered a kit a few minutes ago, I couldn't help myself.
i got some more kerosean for my heater.will try to do some more work soon.this would be a good sticky when the project is finished.still have to do triggerguard, rear trunnion, and headspace and refinish.i will take pics and document all the things the best i can.i am going with alumhyde 2 in semi gloss for the finish.that is what looks closest to the original finish.you guys should grab 1 of these kits while you can.good deal for the price and not often seeing a arabic marked kit.putting the parts on the barrel is not hard even if you do not have a press, you could use some imagination and a hammer.

God hates me! All the writing on that rifle and rear site is awesome, however I am broke as hell! By the time I can afford one they will all be gone or $500....oh well, I will live vicariously through you. Excellent tutorial also, good job! Can't wait to see the finished product.

How did you egg out the holes to make the holes line up?

i used a dremel tool with a carbide cutter i got at sears to egg out the holes.as you see i had to egg out a couple of holes alot, but the ak trunnion and rivits are very forgiving.i crushed the rivits and the holes filled in with no problem. |

Nice work. How do you plan on refinishing, and are you going to try to save the Egyptian markings?
Are you going to blast first. The reason I am asking is I was looking at my kit and the Egyptian markings are shallow and I would not want to loose the markings if I blasted it.
blast first,light of paint.
I would like to see some pictures after you blast and after the painting is finished.
NDS doesn't do Egyptian selector markings ...........do they?
NDS does not do the Egyptian selector markings. There are a couple for people in the link below who are working on engraving plates. i will probably get one of them to do mine when i get everything together.

Does your barrel, trunnion, FSB, and RSB have the sizing numbers on them?
From what I've read at AKFILES if you have a non-matching barrel be sure to pay attention to the sizing numbers or you may end up with a barrel that is too tight or too loose to work with your trunnion and sight blocks. |
Pretty good guess would be no since it was an Eqyptian kit and a Romanian barrel but nice to know. There is always chance each time you build an AK that something is going to be different (probably why many here are born again AK builders after building ARs, ARs are pretty straight forward while AKs have little challenges no matter how long you have been building).
i have done a few barreless kits and switched barrel parts.never a problem.if the part is to tight on the barrel, just sand the barrel with sandpaper until fits.of the part is loose on the barrel knurel the barrel to tighten it up.

Bouncer55, outstanding write up! I just ordered one of those kits to try my hand at assembling all of the parts onto a barrel. Should be a fun build, thanks for the inspiration.

Very well done thank you.
I like the stand that would make a good center piece for my dinning room table. |

This sucks now the Apex kits are sold out with no project restock date.

that stand with my rifle sits on my desk.apex still has these kits.i suggest if anyone wants 1 to grab it.i posted this build pictorial in a couple of places.when guys see that it is not that hard of a build they will probally sell out fast.when centerfire had milled yugo kits for $79,they could not give them away in 2005.i posted my milled to bent blank pictorial and they sold out pretty quick.reason was because back then there was no new milled receivers or no rewelds, thus no way to build until i showed how.here is the link to the kit Egyptian kit with romy barrel from apex |

I know for a fact they had some this morning....CUZ I bought one!
Been thinking about getting another kit...the AMD-65 was looking interesting, but I don't care for the folder stocks, even though I have both an M70AB2 and Tantal, they just don't have the draw or feel of a fix stock. Working on a 80% bent receiver right now and on the down hill with it. I still have one more "G" kit waiting for a receiver...they will have to wait until I my 7.62X39 AR finished though, barrel should be here next week..next pay day I'll order the AR performance 7.62X39 bolt and I'll be ready to shoot that AR. Nice work BTW- your very skilled! OMT-thanks for the push...I needed it to buy the Egyptian kit... |
You talked me into it I ordered one today.
nice build...
i think i'll be going for more of a battle field pickup look. |
