Atlantic has VZ58's again (I've got to quit checking my e-mail because it keeps costing me money).

What is the difference between this and the VZ2008 that was sold a few years ago?

I see that. I think they were on sale for $399 when I got mine. Yikes.

The receivers are slightly different. To put a side rail on my 2008 required killing the mount to fit. The rifle shoots great though so it doesn't hurt anything. That $399 deal was awesome.

That's what I remember paying for mine.  It remains unfired in the box with 5 magazines and other related stuff.

I like the vz58. I used to have one. Was $499 new at the time.

I put a quad rail on it, and an adaptor for an AR stock. AK74 style brake. Handguard mounted aimpoint. It was pretty sweet. Also found an obscure part that adds a bolt release. It would extend down from the bolt hold open channel on the bottom of the reciever, and add a button to drop the bolt. Was pretty natural to hit on mag changes.

Miss that thing.

The VZ58 is an excellent design. Machined receiver, tipping bolt, bolt hold open, gas piston. It's more like an FAL then AK.

If I recall, the VZ2008 was made by Century and lacked the tabbed bolt carrier. Couldn't mount the bayonet. Also the CSA guns have Lothar Walther barrels.

They had the bayonet lugs still and their package came with one bayonet, the cleaning kit, mag pouch, and 5 mags. Pretty sweet package for $399. I went woth modern furniture for a while when it was one of my only rifles. I have since went back to beaver barf and folding stock.

Just curious, how long ago were they selling for $399?

Over the years I’ve wanted one of these so bad but couldn’t get past the “doesn’t take AK mags” part. Kicking myself now since I just bought one from AF for $1300.
Mainly buying now just to add to the collection but I’m sure I’ll shoot it and probably love it so much I stop shooting my AK’s.

Tipping bolt? Bolt doesn't tip. The locking arms swing to lock and unlock the bolt.

If they took AK mags, they would'nt be VZ58s.

For that matter, if they took AK mags, you might as well just get an AK.  The magazine is one of the best things about a VZ58.

re
The CZ imported/made guns were never $399 and always went for a premium over the Century guns.  The Century Arms US built guns, VZ2008, with US made receivers & barrels (non-chromed lined) got under $400 12-15 years ago (pre-Sandy Hook shooting).  They were a VZ-58 parts kit assembled on a new US made receiver and US made barrel.  The Century made guns also had a parkerized finish rather than the parkerized & paint of the imported guns. I nearly got one for $325, but passed as I had a Czech made one and bought a Saiga instead for a little more as they were still pretty cheap at the time.  The Century guns were parts kit made into rifles with non-chromed lined barrels.  The Czech made guns (imported by Czechpoint & CZ-USA) were factory made guns with chrome lined barrel.  The main disadvantage of the original imported guns where that they had the factory 15" barrels, so they have a non-threaded cap to make it a legal over all length.

The Czech imported/made VZ-58 were always $750ish on up.  CZ-USA and Czechpoint were the importers that I remember.  I got a Czechpoint made/imported VZ-58 and thought I got a deal at $750 15 years ago.  The deal was really the extra parts (mags and extra folding stock).  They were usually closer to $850-900 unless you got a single stacked one, which sold for less.

The Century VZ2008, also had some minor teething problems which they fixed up pretty quickly (I believe they had to relieve the bolt carrier somewhere).  I also remember the Century safety went in the opposite directly as the Czech guns.  But the biggest difference was that while it had a threaded barrel, it wasn't chrome lined and it was before nitride was widespread.

The VZ58 has a milled receiver and is still lighter than a stamped AK.  The magazines have a last round bolt hold open and the triggers were decent. They were excellent guns and I would be very happy with one over an AK.  Magazines used to be decently priced ($20 each).  They were aluminum and weight noticeably less than an AK mag.  So while you wouldn't want to use it as an impact weapon (like you can with an AK mag), they were durable enough.  The VZ-58 is really a nicer gun than an AK.  The only thing it lacks is the aftermarket that the AK gets.  I foolishly traded mine off for the next new thing and only have a few AKs left.

Let me also state, the Century VZ2008 started out at $550, but it didn't sell well.  They kept dropping the price and it really started selling when it got under $400.  You could still get imported AKs for $400 at that time.  In fact, I think I got a Draco for $300 around that time.

Sure glad I got an Ohio Rapid Fire receiver and a cheap parts kits many years ago. Had to have the bolt carrier tabbed and new FCG but zero other issues.

It’s fun to shoot.
