How long does the Testor's paint have to dry before removing excess?

Like 5 minutes.

my Rock River Arms text is very shallow on some parts so it looked horrible.  So I just removed everything.

Guess I need to start looking for another lower.  hahhaha

Yeah, the rollmarks can be shallow, but not so shallow that they are almost the same height as the receiver surface. I tried to do the rollmarks on my Sig P229R slide, but had the same shallow issue as you did with your RRA.

yeah...the testor's looks like a good idea. what do you use to apply it? just a toothpic?

Toothpicks wouldn't give me a big enough droplet, and the drop wouldn't stay on the tip very long without falling off early. I ended up using "microbrushes", which will hold a drop of paint all day until you touch the drop to the receiver. Works perfectly!

Do you thin the paint or straight from the bottle?

depends.  The white I had was thin enough but the red had to be thinned out

Agreed. White is always pretty thin. The colored paint is thicker.

Removed my white paint and went with tan to better match the FDE furniture. The tan looks too orangeish for me, so I am going to try to find a better paint color or mix my own...

Yep. I have another Mega upper/lower combo in green. I did one in gray, too.

sooo fyrarms or someone... what did you use to complete remove the testor's paint? im not familiar with what a "shotgun patch" or "CLP" is either.   if you could help me with that, that would be cool.

Cleaning patch, like the ones uses to clean bores.

I used a cleaning patch dampened with Testor's Thinner to wipe off the excess paint...but be sure to allow the paint to dry for at least 10 minutes before using the thinner.

I found out that if you do it before the 10 minutes, it will "pull" the paint out of the rollmarks and leave "tracks".

Also, I've noticed a slight discolorization on the receivers finish due to using the thinner, but nothing that a good rubdown with gun oil won't cure.

I gave the Testors paint a try last night and found that I can't get the paint to 'flow' through my engravings with one dab of paint.

Here's how I did it:
I ended up just painting over top of the engraving
Wiped off the bulk of the excess using scrap fabric
Waited at least 10 minutes
Then tried cleaning off the smudges using lighter fluid and some scrap fabric

I suppose it worked out ... ok. I'm pretty proud of how my Spike's Tactical lower turned out, but that's easy considering how deep their engravings are.

My Rock River lower was a bitch. My RR engravings were very shallow because they were mostly filled with their black finish coating.

I have to hand it to you Bushmaster owners who did such a good job on that engraving! I wiped mine completely off and will give it a try another day.

My Remington 870 engraving did turn out nice. I'll be sure to post some pics.

I did have an idea though that might help. What do ya guys think about making a run to the local drug store and picking up a few syringes? I'm thinking I'll suck up a bit of paint and using the needle to simply flood the fine engravings without making ANY mess to clean up.

Ya think that would work?

Syring would work only if the paint is thinned out enough.  The next problem is some drug stores don't like selling syring's to regular folk.

All of the markings look great!

My wife mentioned the same thing ... must thin the paint. After looking at the shallow engravings on my RR ... I kinda doubt that a syringe would work too.

Whatever happened to Nancy Reagan’s quote “Say No To Drugs”? I thought all drug stores hand out free syringes to ANYONE that request them (part of the whole clean needle deal). Oh well … probably a bad idea anyway.

here's what i did for the Crayola crayon method:

rubbed the sharpened end of crayon over the engravings creating lots of shavings on the surface all over the indented text

smeared it around and crammed it into the grooves of the logo and lettering

wiped off excess with a cleaning patch soaked with hoppe's #9 solvent (clp works too)

heated with hair dryer to even out depth

here's the results:

What about a greyscale insted of the white.  Syringes can be easily obtained from a farm & home store, like Tractor Supply, Feldmans, Orscheln's etc....

How do you get the crayon out if you don't like the look?

Never mind, figured it out.
Heat gun and a tooth brush removes unwanted crayon.

So, using the Testors method, did we ever establish what color matches FDE furniture? (If one were so hung up on aesthetics as to actually wonder such a thing.)

Testors Flat Tan will dry to a "coyote tan" type of color. The closest match to FDE is actually a color from Model Masters that I believe is actually called "Flat Dark Earth". It is the paint that guys use for painting military figures and vehicle models.

here is mine that i did with testors.  took about 10minutes.  I used the toothpick method but found that i was getting paint outside of the roll marks and ended up just taking a paper towel with a little paint thinner and making a quick swipe after it dried for a minute.  I did a couple layers of paint to get it to the brightness of my liking.

Why is it silly? Even if it IS silly, does it hurt or offend you in any way? Why do you care? You think it's silly for all those folks who like FDE furniture on their rifles? It's the same concept... making your rifle more visually appealing to the owner. If you think it's silly, don't watch the thread. Easy solution.

What is silly is the fact that you actually took the time to post in a thread about a topic you don't care about.
