I finally got mine together.

It's a Sabre barrel with LMT upper that I coated with Duracoat.  I plan to coat the barrel as well but just had to put it together when the barrel showed up!

I concur. Really, what's the point of carbine if you have to have a 16" bbl?

I actually PREFER Thermolds to USGI mags.  (Thermolds have an undeserved bad rep because a batch that was made for the Canadian military long age was made with inferior materials, and could melt or deform when too hot).  Themolds other than those old bad, Canadian contract ones - are fine.

I don't have anything against USGI mags, mind you - about half of mine are USGI and half are Thermold.  The both work equally well - I just like the feel (and look) of the Thermolds better.

Do you think the ones AIM sells made by "Pro-Mag" would be good? Where did you get most of yours and how much did you pay?

I dind't know Pro-Mag made Thermold mags - I thought they were made by some company in the Carolinas (Master Molder, or something like that?).   Maybe ProMag has taken over the manufacturing?  I don't know.  You might want to double-check - do you have a link?

However, if they are "regular" commercial Thermold mags (and not used, surplus military ones), you can be pretty confident that they are good.  I think I paid about $15 for each of mine, but you might be able to find them for a little less these days (last time I bought some was over a year ago, maybe a couple of years).

ETA:  AHA - there is a thread over in the Magazine forum that talk about ProMag's "new" Thermolds.  So apparently they have started making them now www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=17&t=243651
Personally, if it were me, I would look for some of the commercial ones made by Master Molder in Carolina - and not take a chance with these "new" ones.  Problem is that whether they work properly or not (in the long run) depends on what material is in them.  They NEED to be made with DuPont zytel compound, and the Master Molder ones are (the ones they made for the Canadian military were NOT).  So, not knowing what the material in the ProMag ones are, I don;t think I would personally take the chance.

OK, thanks for the info. I guess I'll either pick up one of those Pro-Mag ones, get some from Master Molder, or stick to USGI mags.

I don't want to continue the thread-jack, so this will be my last Thermold-related post

However - depsite a lot of people repeating rumors and urban legends about Thermolds, I personally have NEVER seen a bad one.

I acknowledge, CLEARLY the ones that were made for the Canadian military were bad (because they were made with inferior raw materials), but I've never seen one of those.  People keep talking about how they will "melt" and stuff like that, but I've never met anyone who actually HAD one of those mythical Themolds.  Maybe a lot of them were surplused once the Candians went with USGI, and people ended up with them?

Be that as it may - I've never heard anything (reliable) that demonstrates a problem with the USA Thermolds made by Master Molder (made with the correct materials).  I've used them for years and years, have never had any problems, deformities, feeding issues, etc - and find them as reliable (in every way) as USGI magazines.

If you guys in fact have had lots of trouble with them - than my experience is obvously too limited, and I stand corrected.

However - I can say that Orlite mags totally suck ass.  I used to have a bunch of them, and I threw a lot of them in the trash, because of cracked feed lips and warped bodies - and sold the rest on ebay.  Very poor quality.

Sorry again about the threadjack!

CGV69 never makes a comment I remotely agree with as far as I remember...

What about it do you not like?  Do you think a Globe and Anchor in the Marpat is gay too?  I just wanted to camouflage it with some sort of goofy pattern I came up with and didn't try to copy.  Most marpats on rifles look like shit and I figure if mine looks sorta goofy, there isn't anything else to compare it to.

Thank you 55Kingpin.  I would probably incorporate a few more skulls and then fill in the voids and overlaps with different shades to give it a mottled appearance.

My comment () was directed mostly the dragon design but holds true for the skull design too. To me it looks like something a 14yo\queer\poser\mall ninja\wanna be\air-softer would do but hell, if that floats your boat then go for it! It's your AR, do what ever you want to it.

cgv-  that's exactly what I don't want.  I'm thinking that the dragons or skulls would NOT be black but would be just subtly different in color compared to the tigerstripe brown of the rifle itself.

How about some Japanese Kanji Script??

Giffman barrel.  Works good but if you are going to use a DD 12.0 FSPM find a different barrel.

Spooky

Spooky-  Why do you say that?  All you need to do is chop off the front 1-5/8" off and you'd have a fine looking middy with a usable bayo lug but more rail than the regular 9.0.

tvone-  that looks like a 20" barrel with rifle handguards.  I think I see the gas block up front, 4" from the end of the barrel, just peeking out of the tube.  That's not a midlength.
