Just picked up a YHM 3080 for my DPMS LR...I am dropping off the rifle today to have it installed...some great pictures on this thread...thanks for doing the test for us.
Can someone posts the overall length for each of the FH/FS tested?
which ones are of the pics is of the Phantom 5C2 flashider and the regular Phantom with 4 ports? i wanna know which one hides the flash better...
They all seem to hide the flash the same. I liked the closed bottom with the smooth front for looks. Most people seem to like the pronged-front, but not me. |
i kinda prefere the pronged edge too for some reason...at first i hated them and i only wanted the smooth edge ones but now that i've seen them on rifles, i like the pronged ones better...i guess i'll get a 5C2....or maybe the 4 port one
But I like the pointy ends on my 5C2! And thanks for the great thread. Don't melt your skis! |
Thanks for the Izzy flash hider review. I have this same fh on my rifle, but still haven't seen any pics posted of what it looks like fired at night. I am hoping to get to shoot my Bushy M4gery this weekend at night, and will try to take some digital pics and get them posted in this thread Sunday. This has been a great topic. Thanks to all that have contributed. |

I have a Colt 16 inch lightweight with no compensator, just a straght barrel. Would it be difficult for a competent gunsmith to install one? I am assuming he would have to thread the barrel...
Just have Adco do it. Less than a week turnaround, including shipping time, for this kind of work. They did a fantastic job swapping the post-ban KKF muzzle brake on my 14.5" Bushmaster upper for a Phoenix flash hider. They're on the Industry forum. |
It looks nice but I think I am done after this one and then the real Colt moderator (which was ruled as a silencer). It is becoming very rare when I can shoot in the dark conditions needed, and if I test any more I will need weeks at a time before the one day comes up that I can do it. |

Thanks for shareing all of your data.
WOW on the HomeMade one. Have you tested the old 3 prong fs? SORRY, I found it on page 3. Ok, how about on a 16" bbl? |
The photos are worst case. 11.5 inch barrel with my highest flashing ammo. A 16 inch with lower-flash ammo would be very little to no flash. If I look at my home-made one compared to the others, I have a larger center opening between the prongs, so perhaps that is why it is bad. It just goes to show how much work was put into the Vortex. |
Whew!!! I like the homemade one.. Turn the lights off at the range and dump a mag...
It was literally like the first thing I ever machined. |
im kinda confused right now. I could have gooten screwed on a deal on a vortex fsHow

http://www.smithenterprise.com/0100_Vortex_Page.htm Does it look like one of these?
If not, it still might be real, but an older model. |
CQToverVmatch,
Thank you for contributing your Young Vortec for this study. It was a valuable benefit. Same goes for the unnamed owner of the 3-prong model. RSilvers, Smith specifically says to NOT use a washer with thiers. It increases flash. Did you use a washer with the Young? |
I have theIzzy FH and it seems to work as good as my A2. I have never fired the Izzy post ban comp though. I was firing Lake City and it always to seem to have low flash. I will try some winchester as I recall it used to flash big time. |
I did not use a washer with either. On the other hand, I only hand-tightened it because I did not want to wrench it
Here is the Vortec: http://www.pof-usa.com/P-416/P-416upper.htm. |

Not always. Page 1 tests, 16": They are about the same. Page 2 tests, 11.5": The Phantom has a larger pattern and they have the same intensity. Page 3 tests, 11.5": The Phantoms have a larger pattern but the Vortex has a higher intensity. Page 5 tests, 11.5": The Phantom has a larger pattern but the Vortex has a higher intensity. My carbines are more similar to the page 1 test with a 16" barrel; I'm going with the YHM Phantom. You can get two Phantoms for the price of one Smith Vortex. Thank you Rsilvers. |

Yankee Hill was thankful to see their flash hider tested and said lots of people have been calling them saying they saw it tested here.
Hope YHM sends you couple of them for your work and unintended promotion of their excellent product
Wow, glad I have a phantom on mine. When looking at the A2 and XM, boy are they bad with stopping the flash.

Has anyone happened to test one of Kurt's Kustom A3 "Milspec" flash suppressors like this one?

Thanks RSILVERS & STEVEN1513, Looks like I 've got an older VORTEC with an extra groove at the tip.
I took it off my OA-96. It's so sharp it snags every thing. Need to get a PHANTOM, the A2 hider thats on now dosen't helphock.gif |
Anyone? |
I just want to clarify. Did you say that the 3 prong fs on a 16" bbl has very little to no flash? I have one, but I'm thinking of getting the Phantom. |
No, I meant that the best of the ones tested, such as the Vortex and Phantom, would have little to no flash on a 16" barrel with flash-retardent ammo because they had very little flash even on an 11.5 inch barrel with high-flash ammo. |
So should I get a Phantom, or is the 3 prong any good at hideing a flash? Not that I'm worried about a flash, but if I'm going to do it I want to do it right.
Get a 3-prong if you have an classic 1960s rifle and want to maintain the look. Get a Phantom if you have anything else. The 3-prong is not even close to the Phantom in performance.
Thanks for your Post. It's pretty cool. BTW are you shooting blanks in those photos? Looks like your shooting in the house.

What's everyone think of these $3.00 'custom' made flash hiders on Ebay:

It looks to be pretty ineffective, also, unless I'm missing some new, modern way to hide the flash. |

rsilvers....
Hats off for your testing. I am very happy with the results of my knock-off. I am just wondering if SOG sold me a fakey or if someone sold SOG a fakey. I guess I will have to contact them to find out. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE TESTING |
Have you thought about testing a Gem-tech Bi-lock with and without the suppressor?
