Very nice.  Is it worth considering also having a few 5-mag "battle packs" laying around as well, particularly a couple strapped to a rig for grab and run use?

Nice setup in the 40mm can (my 40 mm cans are full of 12 ga).  Might have to setup one 40mm can with M855 and 30round mags for the M16 HBAR (mini-bren mag case ;-).

Only down side is that it is hard to carry the 40mm can compared to the 50 cal cans (handel on top) or mags in a bandolier.

One option a friend use to use in the Marines was loading the bandoliers with 20 round mags (had to remove a few threads), to go with the double load out of 30 rnd mags on the web gear (can't have too many bullets on a bad day).  Don't know of any thin bandoliers for 30 rnd mags, just heavier over the sholder mag holders.

after seeing this thread, I bought 2- 40mm cans for my mag storage

To date, I have used a collection of 7.62 NATO and 5.56 cans. These obviously lacked the capacity of the 40mm ones, but the dimensions made for snug and secure storage.

Without sheets of the foam Spooge's examples have, are there other suggestions to keep the mags packed snuggly and 'quietly'?

I am using the 2nd one for loose M855 rounds.

These things are so substantial, they seem almost bulletproof

Thanks for the tip!

I haven't gotten around to loading them up yet because I only have about 500rds of Wolf laying around.

If I load that all up, I'm bound to shoot it all, and it will be gone in half an hour

By redfisher: Without sheets of the foam Spooge's examples have, are there other suggestions to keep the mags packed snuggly and 'quietly'?

I store 40 AR magazines in a 40mm ammo can.  Thirty 30rd mags and Ten 20rd mags.

I cut sections of standard thickness cardboard for the top, bottom & 4 sides as well as dividers for each layer of magazines.  My method of placing the mags in the can differs from Spooges.  Instead of standing up vertically, they are laying in rows horizontally then stacked.  The 30 round mags are in two 15 mag stacks- 3 layers deep x 5 mags wide. Then on one end of the can there is a stack of ten, 20 rd Colts.

Between the 3 layers of 30s is a horizontal cardboard divider as well as a vertical cardboard divider between the 3 stacks of mags.  I found some light cardboard which was about the thickness of a cereal box which was cut into strips to segregate each individual magazine.  When it was all said and done, the mags don't rub on each other or the metal sides of the can and there is near zero shift when transporting.

Looks like you have a good start - but have you considered.....

I'm assuming this is stored at your house or your bunker with your MREs, water, and other survival supplies and that you don't carry this can around with you everywhere you go.  If something did go down, and you weren't near your house, what do you have on hand to fight your way back?

Do you have your AR and some loaded mags with you at all times?  Do you have pre-planned primary, alternate, and tertiary routes to get back to your house depending where you are located?

Are you cycling your mags out if you planned on keeping them stored for ages - especially since you have the USGI mags filled to 30 rounds - not the recommeded 28.

Just some thoughts, otherwise you have a good start.  If I am ever in FL and something goes down at least I know who I can hit up for a resupply.

Yes but thats three different bullet weights (55,62,75).  Which are you sighted in for?  Do you know the click settings on your sights to quickly get to zero on each different bullet weight?  Looks sweet, just not sure how practical 3 different weight bullets would be in a SHTF scenario.

Boy this thread was resurected...

I'll show mine in case anyone needs any ideas.  I keep more of a mix so that any one case would work well alone and I try to keep it so that anyone could lift it (my wife tests them)

I have two types of boxes one is a "general weapons stuff box" and the other is a "lots of ammo" box

The weapons box is on the left, it's a waterproof plastic ammo box it has two bandoleers of Q3131A, 100 rounds of .45 (need to switch this to 9mm now) a bunch of bulk .22lr, a brick of CCI minimags, 20 rounds of .243 corlokt 100 grain, a box of .38+p, 25 mixed 12 gauge, 20 tracer rounds, 3 signal flairs. three magazines, and some expendable weapons cleaning stuff.

The ammo box is a 50cal ammo can.  It has 600 rounds of M193 or Q3131A, 40 rounds of tracer,  100 rounds of 45 and a bunch of 22lr bulk.

I have built three of the ammo cans and three of the GP boxes.  I also keep a few water absorbers and one contractor grade trash can in each one so they could be easily cached outside.  I need to change out some stuff, switch the .45 to 9mm, add magazines to the ammo cans (a little room left and now I have more) and rotate the 22LR maybe.  Now I'm working on some 7.62x39, I'm using 30 cal cans so they can be recognized easily.

Cut up foam, old inner tubes, or rubber mats and contact cement them to the inside of the can. More permament and better looking than cardboard/styro.

Just started loadin' my cans (great idea!).  I dunno why, but I decided it would be better not to have all my ammo in one can and all my mags in another, so I mixed them and made a few cans up.  The cans I use are the .50 Cal SAW cans (modified .50's for 5.56) - sometimes referred to as "Fat .50 Cal Cans".  They are 8½" high by 7" wide x 12" long.

Started with 600 5.56 (Q3131) rounds on strippers and 35 rounds .40 135gr. JHP with several desiccare packs throughout ...

Then a piece of cardboard to hold it all in place and 14 30 round AR mags loaded in ... again, with a few packs of desiccare ...

Another piece of cardboard to seperate and 50 more rounds .40 135gr. JHP with 3 loaded 12rnd pistol mags ...

On top of this I added some dense foam from another gun case to keep everything in place and quiet.  So far, just two cans loaded up and sealed.  Need to order more mags and another case of ammo before I fill up more cans.  I think I will do a total of 5 cans like this and strap them on a large wheeled hand truck ... these things are pretty heavy

OK, me too.  I'll drop mine in here.

Start with one empty tall 50cal ammo can;

Then add 300 rds of Wolf, or select ammo in 20 rd boxes (5 boxes per layer, 3 deep);

Now add 24  30rd mags (or in this case, 23 plus one stupid Bushmaster 10rd mag );

End result.........one beautiful box full-O-love!!!

Close up view;

This is going to be my project for the next 2 yrs, to build one of these every couple of months (if I can) and put it away and forget about it.  This is my range can, but I think it is a very efficient way to store 1020 rds of ammo plus 24 mags, pretty  much instantly ready to go (720 rds in 24 30rd mags, plus 300rds boxed in the bottom of the can).

While mags are cheap, this is the time.  I figure this is just as good as investing in silver right now!!

I find the 50 cans to be quite a bit easier to maneuver with loaded mags.  2 of these ballance perfectly and are just about the right weight to carry without putting oneself into hernia-land.
