Well I hit the range today , and I must say it was a humbling experience. I shot the top right target first and only hit the paper 8 times out of 10 .
As a mater of fact I didn't even hit the grapefruit i looked thru my spotting scope to see how i did, and it was a WTF moment. The second ten shots i redeemed my self a little. I've become to comfortable shooting off the bag. My first 10 shots I was swaying like a tree branch in the wind. I'll do my best to show my "equivalent" range results here. As stated earlier, I tend to shoot empty aluminum cans. In this case, it was Walmart Lime Flavored water because the bright aluminum is easy to see in the desert sunlight. Anyhoo, I started the day with two 30-round magazines and (I didn't count) probably about 30-40 empty cans. I only wanted to verify zero with my carry handle because I had sighted it in on a windy day. Referencing the orange circle there are three cans left. All but one of the others (lower left on its side) flew over the top of the berm as it was hit. Some cans I hit multiple times. I like to hit a can so it flies up the side of the berm, then hit it again at least one more time as it rolls down the berm. Of course, once a can flies over the back of the berm it's history. I finished the second thirty round mag before I had even shot at the last three cans, and decided to call it a day as far as that rifle was concerned. The range distance is roughly 70 yards from the table they tell me.
I didn't take pics of a subsequent range day, but with a Holosun red dot I managed to shoot every one of two bins of 90mm clay pigeons with one shot per birdie. A bystander saw me pop one after another and I could hear him shout through my ear pro, "Damn, Son." So, yes, me, the one who preaches KISS and iron sights, did in fact shoot smaller targets with a really well-sighted in red dot better than I could have faired with the carry handle sights. So you got me there. But dang, I still love to shoot irons. Anyway, sorry, best I've got. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

First group of the day shot cold with my A2 clone and LC M855. I had a near constant 10-15 mph wind left to right blowing me around. Only change since last time was a Schmid single stage NiB trigger with JP springs. Pull is now 5lbs and smooth. I feel like I’m improving and will keep up the dry fire practice. I swapped the front sight post for a taller one since this rifle has an F height FSB. Used my calipers to match the height with the old front sight post and maintained my zero. I was pleased with that. |

Nice to see people posting up their results. I'm gonna try to go back soon. I'm just so damn busy these days. At any rate, exercises like these are way better then just shooting off the bench. These days I only shoot off the bench to zero my rifles.

The only time I ever shoot from the bench -- with any rifle -- is to get a new gun sighted in. Otherwise, I always shoot freestanding. And everyone else at the range always looks at me like I'm out of my mind.

WTF?
Are we seriously talking about hitting a grapefruit with a rifle at 50 yards offhand???? Ya know, I know how sad it is out there, from 5 decades of shooting I know it's basically one man in 1000 that actually shoots their rifle offhand at the range, but dayum, 50 yards? I could nail it every time with my BB gun. FFS guys, get out there and practice more. |

View Quote Lol, sure, but BB gun is a smoothbore, has a trigger worse than a Glock, no red-dot, and I lost the riser piece for the rear sight long ago so I stuffed a folded up lotto ticket under it a dozen years ago. No trying to bust anyone's balls here, really I want to encourage and congratulate people here for trying, I was dead serious when I said that it was probably 1 guy in a thousand other than me that i've ever seen shooting at most public ranges. Rifle that is, most do shoot offhand with pistols, though some even squat on the bench for that. So good job guys, didn't mean to come off as a dick. |

But wife and I just bought our first house ever last fall, it's 119 years old and is definitely a "fixer-upper" that I have to put a lot of sweat equity into for months to come now that the weather has finally eased up But i'm tagging this thread and will try to get out at some point, still so new here I don't even know where the shooting areas are. I can probably get 50 yards in my backyard but I live in a city and got no berm plus neighbors might freak, but I could setup target and do it with the BB gun, is there a place to download that Molon Melon pic so I can print it out? And how many rounds are we talking per group? ETA: Okay I see now, 10 shot groups, cool. When I do get a chance to go to range, will it be okay to post up results from an AK in addition to AR's? I mean this is the AR-15 tech section so don't want to step on toes. ETA2: Scrolling back through this thread, I see some guys are using magnified optics...that don't seem like cheating to y'all? Kudos to you guys using irons or red-dots because that's some good shooting. |
