If you want the bolt to stay open, don't lay it down on its left side. If you have some hokey bilateral bolt release, don't lay the rifle down.

Which side? Left side - the release was pressed.
Otherwise, the bolt catch is spring loaded to move down. Give the rifle enough of a shunt and the friction between the catch and bolt lowers enough for the catch to slip down and let the bolt close. ETA for Tigwelder: https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/Troubleshooting/66/ |

18 year old me in boot with A2, just got from the armory. Set it down on the butt end with enough of a bump that it released and dropped the bolt. Not knowing any better, thought I was in so much shit.

Its a last round hold open, not a bolt hold open .
To see the difference, look at a 1911, where there is a detent drilled in the end of catch, that the detent will hold the catch in that position when the empty mag is removed. So with empty mag removed, the bolt catch is just held in place by the tension of the bolt face against it at that point, and any thing that is going to dance the bolt back to lose that tension that is holding the catch up, catch is going to drop back down via is return spring, and B/C is going to go home. |
