HK for piston is the only one that holds up, but at the weight penalty, scarcity, and exorbitant cost.

516 has a decent track record.

The Emu War could have been won if the Australians used red dots on their handguns. |
If the original AR had been a conventional piston design, and then in 2023, somebody moved the piston to the BCG, everybody would recognize the brilliance and superiority of the Stoner design.

It is a phenomenally dangerous thing when a governing entity is so completely vacant of basic intelligence

So much sand kicking on the DI v P beach.
Both systems work. Is one better? DI has worked for decades within our varied military branches. Most of those branches have been experimenting with piston systems for decades. Now they’re adopting piston designs. Is this the be all answer? No, but it does poke holes in the DI RULZ arguments. My opinion (worth the toilet paper I wiped it on)? I’ve owned and used DI since 1984. Quality built DI is light, reliable and accurate. It’s also dirty. I’ve owned and used Piston ARs since around 2015 (maybe earlier). Quality built P is heavier, reliable (a little more so than DI in some circumstances) and slightly less accurate. It’s clean. Chose your design based upon the attributes you value. |

Oh, and germane to the AR vs AK debate …
I started buying AKs in the 80’s when you could get top quality imports like Valmet, PolyTech, Hungarian FEG, etc without neutered or US parts requirements. I owned tons of them. The best was a Galil 386. The AK has a place based upon its design features. If I lived in arctic conditions I would consider a top of the line AK because being able to manipulate a frozen safety easily would be a major consideration as would being able to avoid a frozen mag release (AR). However, apart from that highly specific requirement set the AR has been proven more accurate, nearly equally mud functional and more easily mission oriented (optics, LAM, etc). |

Scepticism is an exercise, not a life; it is a discipline fit to purify the mind of prejudice and render it all the more apt, when the time comes, to believe and to act wisely. -- George Santayana
