Been mostly stripper clips with the SKS.
Moving up, looking for opinions. Thinking 20 rounders and maybe a plate or something to insert for hunting. Also, where to buy? |
Buy them cheap, stack them deep.
PSA has good deals regularly. |

The minimal would be however many fit in a mag pouch (3 for USGI) plus one to have in the gun, best would be enough to fill 2 mag pouches (and please be using something other than single mag pouches!) plus one, and then at least another 7 in storage. Then decide if that is enough or if you need to carry more, and add as appropriate for the task at hand.

10 cases maybe. Not 10 individual magazines.

The Obligatory "87"...
Most here would say a minimum of "10 per gun". Hope this helps! D |

My Minimum is 32 per gun. There is no maximum:
Twenty 20 round Mags for prone work off bipod or back pack. Keeping your pumpkin low is always a good plan. Ten 30 Round Mags for mag dumps and when multiple assailants come calling. Two 10 round Mags for range work / load development off the bench. For those that value 30 round mags more just reverse your counts. |

Minimum for me is 4 functionally proven magazine per firearm. When it comes to ARs I periodically buy 10 and throw them in a box. If they're ever banned I'll be happy I did. If we ever end up in a post apocalyptic world they'll be good trade fodder.

Thanks all.
I do remember the mag ban. Ordered some from Mag Shack, will keep my eyes peeled for deals, just in case. |

Can't never could 'til try came along.
Just a few more than you currently have.
Add a zero to that and that would be a good start.
Buy as many as you want. Keep some in the range bag, some in backpacks, loaded in ammo cans with the good ammo, some loaded in your plate carrier, one or two loaded on your belt one loaded either in every rifle or very close to it and then a few more for giggles.
Should have a couple hundred lying around as some will eventually wear out and/or break. Truth is though, you're only capable of carrying so many before you can't walk. |
10 is a good start. I wouldnt stop there, but it'll get you up and running. After that, just grab a couple now and then and before you know it you'll have a nice stack.
Start with a PC or LBV that holds six and a belt pouch that holds 2-3, plus one for your gun and a spare.
You are now at 10, buy more when they go on sale and soon you will be looking for a place to keep them all. |

I have 100 5.56 Gen3 PMAGS.
I have about 40 300 BLK PMAGS. Only about 5 of each have been opened. I’ll be thrilled (financially) if they ever ban them. If they don’t, I can always sell them for more than what I have in them as I negotiated a good price for buying so many at once. They just sit in a box for now. Hopefully I won’t ever have to hand them out, but if that time comes I’ll be able to supply the people closest to me. If the idea of worst case scenario isn’t on your mind & just kinda wanna have some for yourself just in case, I’d get 10-15 20 round (prone shooting) & 15-20 30 round mags. They’ll go after the 20 & 30 before the 10 round mags. So might as well have enough for a lifetime while you can get them. Always use the dust covers to relieve feed lip stress if you store them loaded. |

As many as you can carry and then double that.

A young man just starting out with his first rifle should start with 10 as a good number. You can pick up 10 packs for a reasonable price, often bundled with some ammo.
Eventually build up to anywhere between 50 and 100. Even with a lot of rifles that will leave you spares in case of damage or wear. Try and keep between 5-15 mags for each pistol, more for pistols you shoot more, fewer for surplus guns for which mags can be hard to find. |

Minimum of two battle load outs per gun which is fourteen 30rnd mags. I round up to 20 mags per gun just to be safe.

There's no exact science to it, 10 is a good starting point but I'd keep collecting more.
It's just good to count how much you'll carry plus the one on the gun, whatever that amount is, double it, and keep an extra 4 at home as backup. So if you are carrying 6 mags on your chest rig and on your gun (with ammo in them), it's good to have an extra 6 in your car as backup to change out if you need it, plus an additional 4 you can spare to keep at home ready to go. That's a good starting point. Remember that ammo is heavy so you won't be carrying all of your mags at once. When I go to the range I only bring 3 mags and reload them as I need to, but in a survival situation, you can only carry so many mags. Palmetto State Armory during black friday was selling Gen2 Pmags for 7 bucks a piece. I prefer the gen3 Pmags but its not bad to stock up on gen2 Pmags to have as extras. I would wait until black friday and stock up on as many as you can. 50 is way more than you'll ever need, but not bad to have if you get them cheap and over time. I have close to 100 which is obviously overkill. |

Magazines are semi disposable. They will wear out eventually. The more you have in rotation the longer all of them last. I think my Lancers are the only ones I still have over 10 years old, and I started going easy on them since they’re a bit more unique.
I just bought a bunch of the $5 SHK mags from Global. USGI pattern but made from steel. Should be able to rebuild them ages down the road if need be, versus cracked plastic mags or dented aluminum. I have over 100 now. That’s between 5 rifles. I don’t have enough to last my lifetime if there’s a ban yet. |

SKS and a satchel of stripper clips seems simple now. Originally Posted By akethan: How much ammo do you have? Feeling my way into this SFAR. Really just wanted a 7mm 08 AR, but this was cheaper. Whatever you consider to be a battle load, same amount for training, and then add those numbers combined for spares. Done.
After 100 magazines, I pretty much stopped unless it's specific such as a color I am into. |

10 per rifle as a minimum, plus backups when they get damaged.
First fill your personal combat load. Let's say you are a 3 on the plate carrier and 1 on your war belt guy... that is 4. Then plus 1 in the rifle. Fill with your perfered duty/self defense ammo.
Have another identical load out of practice mags so you do not have to download your duty/self defense mags to practice. Add in a couple extras in case you find a bad mag, damage a mag, or lose a mag. Then add in two small capacity mags for bench/hunting use. So the formula for minimum mags where X is the number of mags your kit holds is: 2(X+1)+2(spare)+2(small) For a guy with 4 spots for mags on his kit, the answer is 14. For a guy with 6 mags on his loadout plus 1 in the rifle (7 mag combat load) the minimum is 18. Enjoy your mimimum magazine algebra. |
A typical load out the military seems to carry 8 to 10 sometimes more. I would say at least that add some 20rd mags to your range bag and as many as you can afford stored away.
Thanks! Appreciate the points of view.
Ordered 10 plus the one that came with the gun. 20 round, Gen 3 Magpul. |

You can get alot for cheap from global ordinance when they have their sale at 4.99 a mag.
I honestly don't know how a many I have. I'd guess like 50? Not many compared to some here. My chest rig and battle belt will hold 5 extra. My 3day bag has another 6 pouches inside of it. |
They are wearable items. I’d say calculate how often you shoot as a factor. If they all sit in a box, then you won’t need as many as if you shoot twice a week.
There is a formula..... 1/2 the price of the gun for optics and 1/2 the price of the gun for magazines. So, a $1,000 dollar AR = $500 for optics and $500 for magazines. Total investment of $2,000.
Accountant ETA: Mags are disposable items. Buy more than you ever think you will ever need, then buy a few more. During the AWB, I was refurbishing old worn out mags, because we couldn't purchase new mags. That time sucked... and I am concerned those days will return. |
