What is the best rail cover out there? I've been looking at slate black, rail scales, and magpul type 2. I want something that can withstand heat without breaking the bank. What do you guy recommend?

Magpul two piece ones are nice. I have them on a couple rifles.

Magpul type 2 or Centurion for me

Magpul ones for me as well, very affordable.
Slate Black is great to just more pricey and gives off that "Gucci" rifle look IMHO.

Slate Black if you cant afford Rail Scales.

I like Centurion. They keep your hands from getting burned but still allow airflow to the barrel.

Depends. Skinny rails I like the Centurion covers. Fatter rails, BCM or B5.

My favorite are the Rail Scales but they are expensive.  I have the Slate Black on most of my Mlok railed rifles.  The texture options are obviously limited compared to Rail Scales but the Slate Black texture is a good one (Slate Black only has one texture pattern).  They do come in multiple colors and lengths.

I have some on a PSA AKV that is super easy to bumpfire.  The rail gets very hot, as in you can’t grab it without gloves with no rail covers after some aggressive mag dumps.  I added the Skate Black covers and it’s less of an issue and the covers have held up so far.

In the last pic, you can see that they lay flat on the rail.

Magpul Type 2 can be "customized" easily to fit around light mounts, switches, etc. with a Dremel, a drill or even a small handsaw.  I have them on quite a few rifles, but I've never tried anything else, either.

I used the less expensive (polymer) rail scales on my only AR I'm running panels on. I'd prefer to have bought the g10 ones, but I wanted OD. They've held up fine. They don't cover up much realeste though.

Do you notice the difference in brand when it comes to heat transfer?

No but if I had to guess, the G10 Railscales should transfer heat more easily because it’s fiberglass and resin.  Slate Black only lists their product as a fiber based polymer.  They are injection molded, not layered like the G10.  The difference between the two should be minimal when it comes to heat transfer.

I've had railscales on a couple rifles and really like them. They are a bit cost prohibitive to put on everything. And sometimes having to go around other stuff makes them a pain to work with.

BCM is my general go to because they feel good, add very little bulk, easy to trim to fit whatever you need, and are cheap.

Yesterday I decided I wanted to try Magpul Type 2 and decided to replace the BCM on an AR10. Glad I did. They feel great. Replaced the BCM grip with a Magpul hand stop while I was at it.

When ordering, I noticed a half slot model, and picked up one of those also. Glad I did. Worked out great.

Magpul Type 2 for me.
Right amount of grip
easy to customize with a Dremel to fit against light mounts, VFG's etc. the stay put and can be had cheaply.

I recently traded for an 11.5 geissele build and it has rail scales. First time I've seen them, and I love them. Will be buying more.

Those look like the polymer ones. They're less expensive than the G10. It's what I have on my go to. They're nice. I didn't get them to save money over the G10. I got them because I wanted OD and polymer ones were the only OD ones they offered. I dont regret it. They've been solid and aside from bragging about $ spent, I don't see what the G10s would have accomplished.
